T-Mobile Dash - Official Picture

I'm not a fan of the Standard Edition of Windows Mobile as it doesn't have a touch screen and the start menu is located in the wrong corner! Winking

But the new T-Mobile Dash looks absolutely fantastic!

dash-black-ofc

EnadgetMobile really picked on it, calling the picture "unflattering", and "never meant for the public eye".

I actually like it a lot!

I'm always happy with the Candybar design, the keyboard looks really comfortable with those raised plastic buttons, I like the idea of coloring the numbers in this light blue, and there are 6 buttons on top of a normal D-Pad - just like I like it.

There's something cozy in this phone, don't you think?

Extra-Large iPod Touch - Coming Soon?

touch

TechCrunch has published a post about rumors of an extra large iPod Touch which will be released by Apple soon.

They’ve got this from three independent sources close to Apple, whatever that means. The expectations are that the large screen iPod touch device will be released in the Fall of ‘09, with a 7 or 9 inch screen. Prototypes have been seen and handled by "the sources..."

fuzechef

My friend Doug from FuzeMobility has just compiled a HUGE list of tips and tweaks for HTC Touch Pro / Fuze.

Since I got my Touch Pro I've been doing a lot of modifications to the TouchFlo 3D and other options on the device. (read more about my tips in here).

I went over the list and it includes almost any important tip you can think of. I definitely recommended on reading it - even if you don't have a Fuze.

Few examples:

- How to fix too "yellow" pictures (link)

- How to speed up your Touch Pro keyboard (link and actual link)

And many many more useful tips.

How To: Work with both TouchFlo 3D and the Standard Today Screen

I really love this one:

When I just started using the TouchFlo 3D I was certain it will be a matter of days before I switch it off and go back to my favorite SPB Mobile shell or the good old WinMo Today screen.

But as time went by, I found many ways to improve TouchFlo 3D (speed and other tweaks) and started to actually like it.

But still, I missed the ability to add more content to it, similar to the way Today plug-ins can be added to a Today screen.

So, I started looking for ways to combine both: WinMo Today screen and TouchFlo3D.

The solution is done by using a small utility called SecondToday.

Screen27

This is exciting! I love it!

I installed it and now it's easy to toggle between the TouchFlo 3D UI and the standard Today screen with just one click! Yippee!

Screen29 Screen28

I think it's one of the best tweaks for the TouchFlo 3D - judge for yourself:

Palm's App Store - I gave it a try

palmstore

Palm has released an App Store (powered by PocketGear). I downloaded it to my old Treo 750, but it seems that the application shortcut actually opens up a... web page... brrr...

It was supposed to look like this:

palmappstorescreen

But the user interface seems to be a bit unadjusted to WinMo's PIE. I can only assume Palm designed it to fit their own browser or the Treo Pro's unusual 320 x 320 screen.

So this is what I got:

 Screen30

The download seemed to work just fine, the only problem is: THEY DON'T SAY WHICH PLATFORM IT IS MEANT TO RUN ON!!!

Like: Hello Palm, good morning?! You have 2 different OS on your devices? We need some kind of indication on each app - which OS it is targeted for!?

Lucky for me, I know my way around (a bit), so I can tell by the screenshots - whether the app is running on WinMo (you can see the start icon on the top bar) - but this is an great example for a BAD UI.

Even though I'm a Palm fan I have to say: this thing suck.

HKC Touch... Sorry, BlackBerry Pearl... Sorry, HKC Pearl.

hkc_pearl

EngadgetMobile published a funny picture of a device that really exists.

Let's see if we can guess what it is:

- The name is Pearl, so it may belong to BlackBerry

- It looks exactly like the first HTC Touch, so it may be a new HTC device...

- The UI looks awful familiar... Android anyone?

- And if you look carefully you can see that this one has some serious battery life issues - just like the iPhone.

Recently I've been hearing some rumors about a new site which imitates the Mobile Spoon.

Mobile Spoon Exclusive: How to Add an 'OK' Button in HTC Touch Diamond / Pro / Fuze

dimonadOK

Breaking news! You will love this one:

Ever since I got my HTC Touch Pro I'm trying to tweak it around in order to boost the performance, improve the user interface and configure a hardware 'OK' button.

The Internet is full with people and bloggers complaining about the useless 'Back' button of the Touch diamond / Pro and asking for ways to configure an 'OK' button instead.

Check for yourself!

But today - I'm going to reveal the solution!

How to add an 'OK' button to your HTC Touch Diamond / Pro:

Here's how to do it:

1. Open your contacts

2. Add a new contact

3. Set a name to the new contact called: OK Button

4. Click on the 'Back' button

Kaboom!

Your new contact was added... the 'Back' button acted like it's an 'OK' button!

Is that amazing or what?

(BTW, there's a shorter way to do it which does not require any step at all... :-))

GScroll - Give life to your Touch Panel

Here's an interesting application I tried on the HTC Touch Pro.

What it does is to turn the flat D-Pad surface into a reacting navigation platform.

Here's the information pulled form the author's site:

    'Swipe' to Scroll

GScroll allows you to swipe your finger left/right/up/down on the touch panel to scroll or navigate. This functionality will work in any Windows Mobile application that supports scrolling or navigation via the directional pad.
    swipe_sm

    'Tap & Tilt' to Scroll
GScroll allows you to use your built in accelerometer to scroll or navigate any application. Simply double tap the center circle, and then begin tilting. To exit 'Tap & Tilt' mode, simply tap the touch panel.
    Double-Tap Launch Zones

GScroll allows each of the 4 quadrants of the touch panel to be assigned to a custom application. Double tapping the quadrant will launch the application of your choosing. You can also assign custom actions to the hotkey, such as 'Open Start Menu' and 'Close Current Application'.
    launch_sm

    Smart Scroll Mode
For both 'Swipe' and 'Tap & Tilt' scroll settings, you can either always scroll, always navigate (directional pad), or choose Smart Scroll Mode. This mode will choose the best suited method to control the current application. For example, PocketIE will scroll webpages, while swiping on the home screen will navigate up/down/left/right.
    Supported Devices

HTC Touch Diamond, HTC Touch Pro.

    More documentation in here

I downloaded ands tried GScroll for a while but I eventually removed it as it was a bit too slow. I prefer turning my smart wheel on in all the applications which results in a better user experience.

(Wanna learn how to do that? Click here...)

Mobinnova ICE - a new Windows Mobile Device Phone

    xxx

Ohhh, I love it when things hit up in the mobile arena:

Mobinnova, the company who manufactured the iMate Ultimate 8502 and 9502, has a new device called: ICE.

    Ohhh x2!

The device looks... well, exactly like an iPhone, and seem to be running some kind of an SPB Mobile Shell UI (if the picture is deceiving...). In addition it seems like the d-Pad is somewhat virtual... Can it be?

    mobinnova

According to pocketnow: ” It’s got a 3 inch flush touch screen, accelerometer, 256MB ROM/128MB RAM, WiFi, Bluetooth, FM Radio, TV-out, GPS, MicroSD slot, Triband 3G, Quadband GSM, and a custom interface running on top of Windows Mobile 6.1. ”

    Cool.

    We like new WinMo devices.

    GPS Vs. aGPS

I found some interesting material in the WMExperts about GPS and aGPS.

GPS stands for Global Positioning System, as aGPS stands for Assisted Global Positioning System.

What is "Assisted" and who is the assistant, you ask?

    Here's the answer:

Ever noticed that when you first start a route it sometimes takes a long while for the navigation software to find your location?

Well, it's not a problem in the software of course, it's a problem caused by the way GPS works:

Your GPS device needs to find orbit and clock data for the relevant satellites - this process is called TTFF (Time To First Fix) or "Cold Start" and it takes a while (sometimes few seconds, with my bad luck it usually takes few minutes - after I already took the wrong exit...).

This is where the 'a' gets into action:

When you use assisted GPS this process is much faster because the device is pulling the satellite information from a cellular network, which usually gets this information much faster. This process saves time and battery life, but it can also cause problems as described by Tariq Bamadhaj at MyTodayScreen:

"When aGPS is turned on, it relies on data from your carrier to fix your position. So if your carrier did not have those data, as in my case with T-Mobile USA, aGPS is just a glorified feature on your device..."

    agps

    So, to summarize:

    aGPS gives:

    • Faster location acquisition
    • Less processing power is required by the device
    • Saves battery life
    • Location acquisition indoors or in non-optimal environmental settings

But if the Cellular carrier does not hold the relevant information, bugs and problems may occur.

Read more about it in here: Quick Tip- You May Not Want aGPS On

Windows Mobile 10 Best Achievements For 2008

    11a8e3b982b6c17704821992513813f9

Msmobiles has published their 10 biggest achievements of the Windows Mobile powered hardware and software.

Here's the list (with my personal explanation attached):

    1. HTC Touch Diamond phone - for being the first stylish WinMo phone, leading the way to many other (much better) devices.
    2. HTC Touch HD phone - for being the best Windows Mobile phone.
    3. Palm Treo Pro phone - for being the best Windows Mobile phone.

Oh, I said it already, but hey, I did not compose the list, but if I would - the Treo Pro would have been number #1!!!

    4. Skyfire - I don't know what this one is doing here, I tried it once, it worked a bit slow and had some stability issues, may need to check it again...

    5. Kinoma - the best media consumption software for Windows Mobile - it can do music, YouTube, podcasts, videos. pictures, audiobooks, streaming radio.

    6. SPB Keyboard Pro - For being the leading virtual keyboard application for Windows Mobile.

    7. BeyondPod - (They said it's) the best free podcast catcher - continuously upgraded and great functionality. I personally don't use it.

    8. WMpowerUser.com - the best website about Microsoft-powered phones - I agree - this is the one I enjoy the most.

    9. Internet Explorer Mobile 6 - Why is this one here? Not sure...

    10. The best person of the year - Roz Ho from Microsoft who is working on “Project Pink” (probably: Zune services or Zune phone) together with 500 people, whom she manages.

I would add SPB Mobile Shell - for being the best shell application for Windows Mobile, and probably the best application on this platform. Period.

    What do you think?

    Is there anything left out?

It should now run through all of the weather animations in succession.

    Is that cool or what?

    Yeah it is.

Is that HTC Touch Pro device fun or what?

    It sure is...

    Mouse cursor for Windows Mobile

VirtuaMouse_One-Hand_Screenshot2-small OK, this one is not a freeware, but in case you saw some WinMo devices with a mouse cursor and wanted that too, here's how:

Virtual Mouse - One Hand is an application that creates a virtual mouse for Windows Mobile.

I downloaded it and tried it, but I'm not sure how useful it is.

Devices with touch screen only (i.e. Touch HD) don't need it as they are designed for finger use, and devices with single hand desing (i.e. Treo) are built in a way you only need your 2 softkeys buttons and d-pad.

Nevertheless, if you want to try it out, here's an amazing, powerful, unstoppable link.

HTC Touch HD Wins Another Battle!

    HD knockout copy

Another great victory for HTC and Windows Mobile with the Touch HD beating the guts out of Android, Storm, and iPhone!

If you are reading this blog, you already know that HTC knocked out the competitors in a poll we did couple of weeks ago, but this time it's a fun video contest done by Jon Bentley.

He did a contest between those 4 leading devices, and disqualified 1 by 1:

The Android fell because of immaturity of the OS, and some problems sending and editing word attachments.

The Storm disqualified because of typing problems and no WiFi.

(BTW, who creates a device with no Wifi???)

And then there were 2: iPhone vs. HD.

The sexiest one against the manliest one... (this doesn't sound right...)

And HD won because of better battery life.

I couldn't find a way to embed this video, so click on the image to see it in the FiveFWD site or click here.

    Some Android News

Even though I didn't like the design of the first Android phone and couldn't understand why so many people are rushing to get the first version of the Google phone, I thought it would be good to mention some updates about this emerging mobile platform:

    Garmin:

    garmin_nuvifone

Garmin has announced that they will be releasing their own Android-powered devices sometime in the second half of 2009, shortly after the company’s delayed nuvifone. (Read more...)

    Samsung:

samsung_omnia_android Samsung is working on their own “Gphone” with the aim of second quarter 2009 for Sprint Nextel and T-Mobile.

Samsung currently has 30 Linux and Java experts working very hard on pushing out the new Android-powered handset. They have a team of up to 80 developers currently working on this project. These developers have reportedly been hard at work for about a year now, all we know is Sprint better get a phone quick. (Read more...)

    T-Mobile G2 - Coming soon?

There are some crazy rumors about a new Android-powered handset that is coming to T-Mobile and will appropriately be called the T-mobile G2. G2? Already?  I don't buy it so easily...

The new device will (probably) feature: Android OS, 3G capable ( where available), Full touch Screen, Enterprise Capable, WiFi capable ( no word about UMA), 5 Megapixel camera with autofocus and flash, Address Book, Calculator, Calendar, EDGE and GPRS, Games, Instant Messaging, Megatones, HI-Fi tones and wallpapers, Memory card Slot ( up to 16GB), Mobile Backup, Music and Video Player, Phone Book, Photo Caller ID, Picture Messaging, Real web browsing, Speakerphone, Speed dial, Stereo Bluetooth connectivity, Sync with PC ( better than air sync), Task list, USB interface, Video capture and playback, Video Messaging, Voice Dialing, myFaves capable and T-Zones. (Read more...)

    On-Screen (virtual) Keyboard for Android:

Here's a video showing the new virtual keyboard for the Android, leading the way for touch-screen only devices.

The keyboard will probably be part of an update pack for the Android OS called: “cupcake”, that will also include other improvements.

    More details in here.

Humiliating Moments With Your Mobile Phone

    1274-251nick1983

Wirefly.com, the online leader in one-stop comparison shopping for cell phones, did a contest named: "Most Embarrassing Moment with Your Phone".

Here's the winners and their humiliating stories:

    #1. Karen Emerson

Unfortunate, yet amusing story of absentmindedly forgetting her cell phone in her garter belt on her wedding day and having it ring to the tune of "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" at the most inopportune time -- as her father walked her down the aisle.

    #2. Jon Froehlich

Believing he was speaking to a co-worker on the phone, Jon Froehlich referred to his boss, Mr. Clifford, as "The Big Red Dog", referencing the popular children's book. Unfortunately, it was Mr. Clifford on the other line.

    #3. Stacy Sawyer

Stacy Sawyer had to mitigate an argument between her parents because her father was continuously receiving text messages from "Lo-Cell", whom her mother believed was another woman, when in reality, Sawyer's father was merely receiving notifications that his battery was low!

    #4. David Toledo

David Toledo accidently dropped his BlackBerry into an airplane toilet on a flight to visit a client. He was able to fish it out of the toilet and it was still fully operational. However, when he arrived to the meeting, he was informed by his client that he had a huge blue stain on his face. The disinfectant in an airplane toilet was much stronger than he thought.

The five winning stories, in their entirety, can be found at www.wireflycontest.com.

HTC Touch Pro Thoughts - Week #1

    TOUCH_PRO copy

    Home sweat home!!!

After wandering around with some BlackBerry and iPhone devices - I am finally back home - to the good old Windows Mobile!

And not just an average one - the BEST of them all - the best smartphone in the world (according to the readers votes).

So, as BlackBerry failed to excite me and iPhone failed as a... well... a phone - let's see how the Touch Pro will do!

    But before I start, here's a question:

What is the difference between an iPhone and a WinMo phone?

Yes, I know: iPhone is for kids and WinMo is for men, but why?

They are both running a mobile platform, they should both improve the phone quality , and they both have other pros and cons.

    But:

While the iPhone is some kind of a limited entertainment console - Windows Mobile brings the richness of windows into your pocket.

    Hear that?

    Windows.

    PC!

    A Pocket PC!

[Gee, what a great name, I should propose it to Microsoft...]

Outlook, Tasks, Notes, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, OneNote - All in one phone! That's what I'm looking for!

    Gimme Some Lovin'! That's productivity!

And how many settings! the joy of configuration!

Windows Mobile is so tweakable it's addictive!

Ha ha ha ha! (evil laugh).

    IMG_0298

OK people, enough with the excitement, let's get back to the Pro:

    Hardware:

Although a bit stocky (at least 2 times thicker than the Diamond) - this phone is still beautiful.

    IMG_0263 IMG_0264

(Thick as it is, the Treo 750 is still thicker).

     IMG_0315

No doubt, the Touch Pro is Thick As A Brick, (Jethro Tull said it 35 years ago!).

    thick

Does it mean that it feels bad in the hand? absolutely not. The Pro feels great, especially when it is expanded, the sliding keyboard sits well in the hand and feels very comfortable. Impressive stuff HTC!

My only comment about the keyboard is about the size of the space bar key - I think it's a bit too small.

    Screen:

The screen rocks, with a beautiful 640×480 VGA display. (The size is not big though, so if you are looking for a big impressive screen- Touch HD might be a better option). Also, I've noticed that all the latest HTC device tend to have a tough touch screens which require stronger finger pressure than other devices, it can be improved a bit by some registry tweaks but still... worth mentioning.

    D-Pad:

Skipping some of the good things (and there's a lot of them), I may have found the Pro's Achilles' heel, and it's disturbing:

The front of the phone includes a 5-way D-Pad and 4 buttons: Home, Back, Send and End. All of them are covered with 1 wide surface that also reacts to finger touch (like the iPod).

    Few problems with it:

    1. Since all the buttons are made out of one piece - pressing left or right sometimes ends up pressing the 'End' or 'Send' buttons. It's so inconvenient that it's sometimes easier to slide out the keyboard and navigate using the arrows...

    2. With this combination of buttons, there's no easy way to click on the 'OK' button - I'm really missing the Treo's OK hardware button. It doesn't exist in the full keyboard as well, which is a shame.

Considering the screen sensitivity and the fact that WinMo's 'OK' button is located somewhere at the top right corner - it makes it really hard to reach it with the thumb.

Besides, the device currently has 3 buttons that act almost the same: Back, Home, and End. Why do I need the 3 of them? I would have replaced the 'Back' with an 'OK' but it seems like HTC blocked the option to re-map the hardware buttons. I'm still looking for a way to tweak it all around (if you know how - please tell me!).

    3. Scroll wheel: this is a great addition to the D-Pad - it gives you a way to circle the pad with your finger to scroll things. Cool.

Unfortunately HTC only implemented it on 2-3 applications  - but luckily for us there's an application that can configure more applications to use it - which is great.

Other than those points - I really think the Touch Pro is a... Pro.

    IMG_0307

    Software:

The Touch Pro is also loaded with extensions and additions to Windows Mobile:

TouchFlo 3D - a very impressive shell application, probably the most comprehensive one of all UI wrappers for Windows Mobile. A lot of animations, great boost for fun and show off. Most people tend to love it.

But I have some issues with it:

First - it is not customizable, as it is not yet mature enough. I bet HTC are currently working on their second version which will include more features as well as more configuration points. In this respect it still feels like version 1.0. (HTC did include ways to tweak it around, so it adds some flexibility to the shell).

Second:I actually like my today plug-ins. I worked hard to find the perfect set of plug-ins and it's hard for me to let them go... I wish there was a way to combine the standard Today screen as one of the tabs.

Third, it's sooooo heavy! Not only it's working too slow (even after the performance tweaks) - it makes the entire device heavy and slow, getting back to the home screen is slow, moving from portrait to landscape is slow, in fact, if you run some serious applications on the device - you better shut it down first.

So I did, and now my Touch Pro works like an animal, a cannibal!

The only problem is - that I kinda' miss it now that it's gone, I sure hope HTC will release some updates to the TouchFlo 3D soon, updates which will solve those problems.

RSS Hub - what a great application for reading feeds. I love it.

Scrollable lists - this one is actually a tweak HTC added to Windows Mobile, bringing finger gestures and scrollable lists. It feels good, and along with the bigger menu items, it really makes it possible to use most of the applications without a stylus.

You see? What did I tell you about Windows Mobile? It's the best, Jerry. The BEST!

You see a feature that doesn't exists out of the box - and boom! You can count on HTC, XDA-Developers or any other developer to simply add it to this great platform.

That's it for this week's review. More to come in the next reviews of the Touch Pro. I'm off to play around with the best smartphone in the world.

    More TouchFlo tweaks in here.

Internet Explorer 6 (for Windows Mobile) - Video Review

PocketNow published a video review of the Microsoft's Internet Explorer 6.

It is not released yet (planned to be in 2009), but according to the reviewers it is much better than the old one (gee I wonder why...).

It has support for Flash and AJAX, plus has a much improved rendering engine.

Great. Now let me go back to my Opera Mobile.

    Lost (the Mobile Edition)

Here's something you didn't know about mobile phones:

Apparently, 855,000 handsets are flushed down the toilet every year in the UK only.

    GerberMaxwellToilet_e

    Amazing isn't it?

I think I'm going to get myself a new WinMo phone... In the sewer!

810,000 handsets are being left in the pub

315,000 are forgotten in a taxi or on a bus

116,000 are going through a spin cycle with the dirty laundry

    And... listen to this one:

60,000 phones are chewed by dogs.

    IMG_0142

I wonder if they swallow it by accident while drinking from the toilets...

    dog-toilet-bowl_preview

Oh wait, no! Stop it! Puyol! Don't eat that! It's vibrating! And leave the antenna out of it!

Note: the numbers are from 2007, but I assume they did not went down during 2008...

Make your Touch Diamond / Pro act like an iPod

    aaa

Following Bubby's comment I jumped by his blog (The Internet Ate My Homework) and followed his suggestion to tweak things up in the HTC's TouchFlo 3D.

There's a way to make the scroll wheel (located in the device D-Pad) act like similar to the iPod and scroll through long lists.

The way is to use a tool called Diamond Tweak.

To download - jump over to montecristoff and check out their great tools.

BTW, they also have a tweaking tool for the Touch HD, yummy!

Probably the ugliest phone in the world...

Something strange is happening with some new "fancy" phones.

Couple of days ago I mentioned an ugly looking Vertu phone worth $30 000.

Today I simply must show you this:

    givori-nefertiti-the-ugliest-phone

Although it may look like an ancient phone pulled out from the bottom of the ocean - it's actually a Nokia Arte 8800 covered with dirt... brrr... sorry, covered with gold and crystals...

This time the price is only $ 4,500.

I'm taking orders in case you are interested...

HTC Touch Pro is in the house!

    TOUCH_PRO copy

    It's Big!

    It's Powerful!

It’s the best smartphone in the world!

    IT's HTC Touch Pro!

OK, so the story goes like that: couple of weeks ago I published a poll in order to know your opinion about what is the best smartphone in the world.

The poll took place here at the Mobile Spoon and also at MobilitySite where I write every once in a while with a lot of pleasure.

One week later I published the results of he poll, and it was an amazing knock out for HTC with both the Touch Pro and Touch HD receiving over 60% of the votes.

The winner was HTC Touch Pro: (complete results in here)

    winner copy

I somehow finished the post with the following words:

"HTC: if you are reading this post, I think I deserve brand new HD and Pro devices (OK, I settle for just one of them... pretty please?).

After all - I need to know the phone that just won the title "best in the world" - in person, right?

(Say yes! Say yes! I promise to write a fair review about it!)"

At that time I was not aware that someone did actually read it.

So after few days I got a small package, written HTC on it...

Hmm... I thought to myself, suspicious as I always am: is it a bomb sent by Apple as a result of my negative iPhone thoughts?

Could it be that someone from HTC or Microsoft is actually reading my humble blog?

Was it a mistake not to write: "I need 1 million dollar" instead?

I guess Microsoft are not reading my blog, but chances are that they are reading MobilitySite! And they did!

So although my friends worn me not to open the box I did it.

(OK, you caught me there, my wife did...)

    And guess what?

    HTC Touch Pro.

    For my review.

So, I guess now it's my part of the deal.

For a week now I'm using the Pro as a phone, and I already have some interesting insights about this amazingly equipped device.

As usual - not everything is positive, but it's Windows Mobile - the best mobile platform, my favorite one, and as you already know my reviews - I will try to stick with the areas that interest me such as user interface, device usability etc.

I will write my thoughts in a new series of posts titled: Touch Pro Thoughts starting very soon (probably this weekend).

So be sure to check out the Mobile Spoon in a couple of days - the best way to stay tuned with new posts is to subscribe using your favorite RSS Reader.

Samsung Omnia - what do you think of it?

    main

I know the Omnia did not perform very well in the "Best Smartphone in the world" competition we recently did, but according to many sites and blogs - it is probably one of the best WinMo devices today.

Beyond the great specs, there's really a lot of custom UI in the device, not as fancy as the TouchFlo 3D, but probably more productive.

Here's what GadgetsZone had to say about it:

"The Omnia has a beautiful 3.2  inch 240x400 display that dominates the front of the device. It isn’t quite as high-res as some of its competitors, but it looks great and is extremely responsive. The biggest problem with some of these touch screen handsets is that the display isn’t sensitive enough to a finger press. Fortunately the Omnia passes with flying colours.
In fact, Samsung are so adamant that you won’t need a stylus that there isn’t a slot for one! Some may see this as a nuisance, but in a week of use without it we can safely say that the stylus can stay in the box."

    Having second thoughts anyone?

    Garmin Nuvifone gets FCC approval

    Nuvifone2

I found this piece of news all over the web, but I thought it would be a good idea, (now that this blog has much more readers than few months ago), to give you a reminder about what seems to be a great phone:

The things I like in this phone is that it's much more than just an iPhone clone! it has got a beautiful user interface, with huge icons for finger use, and it includes some interesting new concepts, mostly around GPS, navigation, location based services and pictures.
(for example, every picture you take embed the GPS location, which seems to be embedded in most of the common applications)

Most Will Access Web Via Cell Phones by 2020

"By the year 2020, a majority of tech savvy citizens will be attached to their touch-screen and voice recognition-based smart phones, blurring the lines between personal and work time, as well as physical and virtual reality, according to a Tuesday study.

How does that differ from 2008?

People are currently addicted to their BlackBerry or iPhone devices, but by 2020, those devices will be the primary Internet connection for most people around the globe, according to the report from Pew Internet & American Life Project."

    Source: PC Magazine.

Personally I already find myself using my mobile devices for many of my online activities:

    - I too am addicted to sending mails from Blackberry - as nowadays, mails are not just a working tool but also an endless chat with your work colleagues while performing the actual work 24/4 (well, maybe: 18/7).

    - I read some of my RSS feeds from my WinMo device

    - I mostly use Gmail from iPhone.

With so many Wifi spots all over the place combined with devices which focus on online capabilities - I think we will see the trend increasing much earlier than 2020.

    5 Mobile Trends for 2009

Most predictions for 2008 talked about more entertainment devices, more on-line content and mobile 2.0.

I think most of it came true, but as we are getting closer to 2009, let's see what Critical Path has to say about the upcoming year:

Donald Dew, chief technology officer at Critical Path, sees five top trends already developing: the emergence of the 'real' smartphone; the development of vertical ecosystems such as Nokia's Ovi; the digital divide; the re-emergence of location-based services; and the economic outlook.

The emergence of the 'real' smartphone:

"Apple, in particular, has changed the expectation that a smartphone will be ugly but feature-rich, to it being attractive and with smoothly integrated useful functions," he said.

This trend will continue as phones gain larger screens, and the lines begin to blur between business and personal use.

    Vertical Ecosystems:

Influenced by the success of the iPhone and its tight integration with Apple's App Store and iTunes services, Microsoft is expected to pursue this model, while Nokia will expand Ovi, and RIM will build out its own store.

    The digital divide

According to the predictions, Smartphones will also represent a third of all handsets sold within three to five years.

But there will be a growing digital divide, with the majority of mobile internet users represented by the developed world, while the enormous growth in markets such as Asia will continue to be driven by basic text and voice handsets.

    Location Based Services

Applications which combine features with location based services, location based advertisements, will be more and pore popular.

And what about the handset makers?

According to Dew, "Nokia is likely to take a hit, and there will be shake-out in the value chains, and possibly consolidation among the handset makers".

According to him, the 'big five' handset makers are likely to survive, but the market could see the emergence of a 'big eight' instead, as Apple, Google and RIM increase their share at the expense of the current dominant players.

And I'm wondering whether such prediction means I need to change my blog theme to Android? iPhone or BlackBerry?

    Full article in here.

    How I Fuze!?

    fuze

Wanna get some feeling of the HTC TouchFlo 3D?

    Here's a cool way:

HTC just opened a site called "How I Fuze" which is actually an emulator of HTC Fuze.

Head over to http://www.howifuze.com/ and play around with the TouchFlo 3D.

Apple says: "iPhone is a Gaming Console"

Just read this quote at EngadgetMobile:

"John Geleynse (AKA Director of Technology Evangelism at Apple) made some statements regarding the iPhone platform that should seriously raise a few eyebrows. During an ADC "iPhone Tech Talk" in San Jose, Geleynse apparently waxed excited about the potential for the handheld as a viable threat to the DS (and the PSP by proxy), calling the iPhone a "gaming console" and claiming that "it's not a phone, it's a console experience."

    Cool!

I didn't know John is reading my blog!

Fata Morgana - Microsoft app running on iPhone?

    seadragon-snapshop

    Spooky.

I'm currently playing with a Microsoft application running on my iPhone.

    Why?

    I have no idea...

It's a useless application called Seadragon, demonstrating once again the same Silverlight trick where you have an "infinite zoom" capability to drill down some gigapixel-sized images.

    Boring.

Saw it 100 times already with Silverlight.

    I'm deleting it.

    Give me something productive please.

    Some people just can't stop

    Talking about rumors...

    no-zune-phone-ces2

After writing couple of posts about the rumored Micro-Phone (Microsoft's first Zune based phone), I decided to let it go and stick with trying to improve Windows Mobile as it is.

But, I keep getting those mails with links to new rumors.

So this time, Gizmodo comes to the rescue smashing up any chance of a Micro-Phone.

But, even though Microsoft are officially denying the phone, for some people it's just not enough, and today I received another email with the following link which I don't even bother to summarize.

Let me tell the world a secret: software companies (including Microsoft) are working in parallel on many new stuff. Some of it will not even get into a release phase, many will totally fail, and only few will succeed.

But for now: NO ZUNE FOR YOU!

    Vertu Boucheron 150

    vertu-boucheron-150

Vertu Boucheron 150 is a 3G device made of gold, with a sapphire keyboard. specially designed for the Paris jewelry house, celebrating its 150 anniversary.

It is supposed to be very fancy and the price is around $30 000.

I personally find it to be very similar to a phone that was just run down by a car...

I would much prefer the class covered version of the Treo Pro.

Mysterious Announcement from Palm Coming Soon...

    Treo Pro

You all know I'm a big fan of Palm devices.

No, not the old ones with that strange looking PalmOne OS, I'm talking about the perfect Treo ones which fit the hand perfectly, work fast and have 100% stability.

But, as I already wrote here many times in the past, Palm is in a very bad situation; stuck with an old OS, few devices which run another OS (WinMo) but actually being manufactured by HTC, and nowhere to go...

But wait, is there a twist in the plot?

Can it be that while we were all talking about Palm's problems, a new operating system named NOVA was created silently?

Few days ago, Palm announced a special invitation only event for CES 2009.  The wording on the invite says the following:

“Come to CES to see all that Palm New-ness you’ve been waiting for.”

Really? Personally I was just waiting for a chance to put my hands on the Treo Pro, but other news can be great as well!

Check out the full invite at Palminfocenter.com.

Comic Reader - I can read comic books in my Windows Mobile Device!

    Screen16

    The JOY!

I've been trying to find a decent way to read comic books in my WinMo device for a long time now.

I thought I found one (PocketCM Image Viewer which is a great freeware) but it was a bit hard to read the text.

Comic Reader is a new freeware that opens up zip or rar files as well as those comics files (.cbz).

Look at it! It's beautiful! I was just thinking about creating such app myself but since my time is so limited lately I never got to actually do it - but one of the gurus in the XDA-Developers just did it for me. For us!

It's a bit slow, but WHO CARES!??

The freeware has few nice options, configurable navigation buttons, full screen support and more.

And best of all, it has this lens (actually called Lense... ) feature that lets you zoom only the text area.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!!!

    I LOVE IT!!!

    Here's an example:

    Regular mode:

    Screen18

Click on the white text area and you get this:

    Screen19

Did I mention I love it?

You can read more and download the freeware in here

The credit goes to the developer of this beauty: Ty Landercasper - Great Job!

I'm off to bed. Have some readings to do!

NavTetris - a free Tetris game that uses HTC accelerometer

    screenshot

If you like playing Tetris and hold one of HTC's Touch device - here's a nice Christmas-themed Tetris game combined with the hardware accelerometer.

"NavTetris is a Tetris game for touch pro / Diamond. Tetrominoes can be moved and rotated based on the readings from accelerometer and scrollwheel sensors. It should work on both Portrait and Landscape modes."

Bricks can be moved by tilting your device to the left or right, or by using the left or right key.

Bricks can be rotated by using the scrollwheel (both directions), or by using the up/enter key (only clockwise direction).

Bricks can be dropped to the bottom by using the “down” key.

Try it out! It's a freeware.

iDialer - a free iPhone-like dial pad for Windows Mobile

    iDialer-0_3-1

Just found this great looking application called iDialer.

It looks exactly like the iPhone's phone interface (which by the way I find less efficient than other phone applications).

Here's what the developer has to say about iDialer:

"iDialer is a finger-friendly dialpad for Windows Mobile PocketPC phones. It's simple, easy to use, speedy, and well integrated with iContact! It works with both VGA and QVGA, in both portrait and landscape mode! It can be used to replace your built-in dialpad or as an easy front end for GrandCentral, Phone.com (in beta), and JaJah!

iDialer is a work in progress... planned future updates include:

    • Better OS integration
    • Speed Dial
    • in-call screen

    Check out the xda-developers thread!"

    Developer's site: http://www.supware.net/iDialer/

A mobile friendly download link can be found in here.

Windows Mobile Essentials - Building Up a New WinMo Device - From Scratch...

Look out! Tons of freewares coming through!

Few days ago I noticed my device does not synchronize anymore with ActiveSynch. I tried a couple of fixes which didn't work so I decided it's time to format the thing. You know, start all over again...

Here's a summary of all the applications I've installed after performing the hard reset - a lot of freewares coming through!

    SPB Mobile Shell

Best Shell application ever created for Windows Mobile. Without a doubt - my favorite application - and also the only one in this post which is not free (but it's worth it, believe me)

Completely changes the way I work on my mobile device, I love it.

See previous posts I wrote about it including download links

The first thing I do after installing this beauty is to re-configure some of the default settings; removing the useless today screen, configuring the shortcuts menu, and changing the scheme colors... let's pick something special this time... Blue.

    There it is.

    Screen15

    .Net compact Framerowk

Most applications will not work without it - if your device is not new - you probably don't have it by default - so use the following links to download and install it.

    .Net Compact Framework 2

    .Net compact Framework 3.5

MyMobiler - Remote Desktop for Windows Mobile

This is a genius application. Not sure everyone needs it - but for me it's one of the first things I install whenever I start using a WinMo.

Luckily this app knows how to install itself automatically on every new device which means once you have it on your PC - it will be passed to the phone automatically.

If you don't have it yet - get it, it gives you a full control on your device from your PC, it has the capability to get screenshots and even videos. Fantastic app.

    Download MyMobiler

    Advanced Centrifugation Tool

Old version: Advanced configuration Tool for Windows Mobile

New version: Advanced Configuration Tool - All the WinMo Tweaks in one freeware (this one has more options but requires compact framework 3.5)

The reason I like this freeware is that it gives an easy way to disable the annoying security warnings every time I install a freeware.

    Great.

So now I have beautiful UI, powerful platform to continue with and some personalized configuration.

Windows Mobile in its' best - just like I love it. (who's your daddy now Apple?)

    SpoonAlarm

OK, it's true that I developed this one, but it's in my recommendations list because I really love it. it's simple, the UI is finger friendly and it fits my needs and hey, it has been downloaded by over 100,000 people so far!)

    SpoonAlarm_8

    Download SpoonAlarm

    Office Mobile 6.1

In case your device does not run Windows Mobile 6.1 - this is a must.

It's a free upgrade to all the office applications.

    Download Office Mobile 6.1

    FTouchFlo

This great freeware tweaks your winMo lists to become scrollable by finger - just like the iPhone does.

    Download FTouchFlo

    SpoonDo!

SpoonDo1 copy Another tool I built mainly due to my personal need.

BTW, not that I mean to brag or anything, but you all know I just purchased an iPhone, up to know I downloaded around 7-8 free tasks applications (yeah I know, iPhone doesn't have that built in...dhaaa) - and so far I like none of them... brrr...

Anyways, SpoonDo! is a simple but efficient free tasks manager.

    Download SpoonDo!

    iContact

Another free app that will improve your WinMo phone. Some devices may not need it due to built-in plug-ins but if you are looking for a good contacts application - this is the one.

    iContact0_76-3

    Download iContact

    Macromedia Flash Player 7

Flash for Windows Mobile. You never know when you may need it.

    Download Macromedia Flash Player 7

    Opera mini

Without a doubt, Opera is a leading Internet browser application.

There are some alternatives, but from my humble experience Opera is much better.

If you are looking for a free alternative - Opera Mini can be an option as well.

    Download Opera Mini

    TCPMP

The Core Player is probably the best media player for Windows Mobile.
If you are interested in seeing movies on your WM device—this is the perfect solution.

I think it's no longer a freeware - but here's a link to the older version which works fine for me (every flight...).

    Download TCPMP

    Fring

Great way to combine all of your messengers in one app.

I like the user interface of this one, even though I normally don't use it that often.

    Download Fring

    PocketCM Image viewer

The best free image viewer I know. iPhone like user interface, powerful zoom (the best I tried so far) - a very good app.

    Download PocketCM Image viewer

    Google2Go

All the important Google apps in one freeware. Nice one.

    Download Google2Go

    ZNax &Shift

There's a lot of nice free games for Windows Mobile but those two are the best ones! If you have a partner to compete against - those are great games - and a freewares too.

(which reminds me - my wife just broke my ZNax record few days ago... I must finish this post and spare some time for a comeback)

    Download ZNax

    Download Shift

    PHM Registry Editor

If you like tweaking your device back and forth - this one is for you.

A great editor - very old but still working - similar to the registry editor of Windows XP etc.

Has some bugs every now and then but not things that ruin the device completely (I encountered some saving problems few times but nothing serious)

    Download Registry Editor

BTW, the first thing I do after downloading PHM Registry Editor is to change the popup menu font to make my device more finger friendly.

I usually change the font size from 800 to 1000 (in points) which seems like turning it from size 8 to size 9 or 10.

If you wish to learn more how to do it - click here.

That's it for tonight. 1-2 hours (ok maybe 3) and you have an upgraded Windows Mobile device; improved user interface, lot's of tweaks, few productivity tools and all (except for one) - for free!

(Oh, and don't forget to backup your device once you have all your favorite apps in place... Winking)

Freewares There's a lot of additional freeware out there, you can find all the ones that were reviewed here (only interesting ones of course) under the keyword freeware (also located in the left sidebar).

    P.S.

If you have additional 'must have' applications for Windows Mobile - share it with us (comments or email) - and I will wrap up your suggestions in a follow-up post.

    Enjoy!

First Acer-Brand Smartphone - Coming Soon.

    acer-glofiish

According to DigiTimes, Acer will be releasing its' first Smartphone in Q1 2009.

Acer used to develop PocketPC devices (mainly for GPS) but after it completed the acquisition of E-Ten earlier this year it was only a matter of time until some new models will be released.

"Acer's smartphone development has been driven by its acquisition earlier this year of Taiwan smartphone maker E-Ten Information Systems. The acquisition was completed in September and market watchers expected Acer-branded handsets to hit the market by the end of this year. However, Acer representatives have said that a more reasonable launch timetable would be first-quarter 2009 initially in Western Europe and Russia, with other markets to follow later. Adding to the confusion, company chairman JT Wang recently said that the launch may come as late as the second half of 2009, as Acer it is still negotiating with telecommunication service providers worldwide."

Tweak: Auto Rotation for HTC Touch Diamond, Pro, and HD

    gsen2

One of the biggest disappointment I had when I just started playing with Touch Diamond was that the screen does not rotate automatically even though it's petty obvious that with the accelerometer it can and should be done!

Well, you can count on the WinMo community that if it can be done someone will implement it (and probably make it a freeware too...)

GSen is a freeware designed for HTC's Diamond, Pro and HD, all suffer from the same limitation.

It auto-rotates the screen and unlocks the accelerometer to work with all applications!

You can select which programs you want to exclude, or which programs you want to include...

It also enables switching off the device when put on the back.

    cewoool!

    Download GSen

Cliquick - Innovative Keyboard for Windows Mobile

    image

Couple of months ago, I had a meeting with the founder of Cliquick - a company that develops an innovative keyboard for cell-phones and smartphones and PocketPCs.

The idea behind Cliquick is optimizing the layout of the keys in order to reduce the number of clicks (when using a 12 keys layout in cell-phone). Over the time it evolved to become also a virtual keyboard for Windows Mobile with several layouts including couple of full QWERTY layouts.

At first I was very skeptic about the idea, as I am usually against virtual keyboards and always prefer devices with built-in QWERTY. But since it's a friend of a colleague - I gave it a try.

Surprisingly, the meeting was very interesting, it seems that Cliquick patented technology is indeed unique and the product is based on a serious research and a lot of users groups activities.

I downloaded it and used it for a while, and since I like both the idea and implementation - I decided to officially promote it here in my blog and in my SpoonTools site.

    In General:

The application is designed elegantly. The installation is smooth, the configuration is rich but self explanatory, and above all - the keyboard is working extremely fast. Not trivial when talking about virtual keyboards.

There's a lot of different layouts (3 per each mode - landscape and portrait) which makes the keyboard highly configurable.

All the layouts are completely finger friendly and integrate well with WinMo's auto-completion.

Each button has an additional number or special character which is assigned when the key held down. I really wish I had that feature in my iPhone or my Blackberry - it really saves time.

    Portrait Mode:

    ddz5sk8r_91fs4d6dgz_b

The most innovative idea Cliquick brings is around typing in portrait mode. I personally find it very hard to use a full QWERTY layout when using a portrait mode. My finger is just too thick. (This is one of the things I found impossible in the Touch Diamond).

Cliquick brings another approach to the table. Instead of trying to squeeze the complete QWERTY, Cliquick has only 12 keyboard buttons, hosting letters and frequently used signs (such as @, period, etc.). More clicks when typing but more finger friendliness.

What's the big different with other cell-phones keyboards you ask?

Here's the answer: below is a traditional numeric layout of a cell-phone keypad: notice that out of 12 buttons, only 8 holds the letters? hmmm, makes you wonder why they did it like that, isn't it?

(Well, maybe it's because no one was texting 100 years ago Big Grin)

    222px-Phone_Numberblock_ITU-T_E_161_svg

The Cliquick keyboard makes a much better usage of the keyboard using all 12 keys with an optimal way. Every button starts with a frequently used letter, which minimize back the number of clicks and increases the speed. According to Cliquick, 70% of the characters require a single tap to enter.

The portrait mode comes with 3 different skins which effect the size of the keyboard:

    Untitled-4 copy

    Landscape Mode:

I still think that portrait mode is not enough, and even if it becomes finger friendly, I still prefer landscape typing.

One of the things I like about Cliquick is that it is well adjusted to the new devices. It has a built-in landscape mode (switches automatically) which can compete easily with any other virtual keyboard applications for Windows Mobile.

    k1

According to Cliquick: "the reason why the keyboard is better adjusted to finger size is that most other full QWERTY keyboards assign 11 keys in each line while Cliquick assigns only 9 (concentrating on the keys you really need), Cliquick keys are ~25% wider that comparable landscape keyboards – which is a big difference".

Here, as well, there are 3 options, each with its' own advantage: Keyboard, Keyboard classic and keyboard comfort.

    k2

    Screen13

As said before, holding down the key can also be configured to do something. I set it to write a number or a symbol which seemed like the best option.

    Screen14

    Support for 100 Languages:

Cliquick recently released a new version (2.12.01) of the product with a complete support for over 100 languages.

    dcjsh4m8_25db6njnch_b dcjsh4m8_23fxt26kfw_b

Here's the impressive list of supported languages:

English, Cyrillic, Hebrew, French, German, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Afrikaans, Byelorussia, Catalan, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Estonian, Filipino, Finnish, French, German, Hungarian, Icelandic, Irish, Italian, Latin, Latvian, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Pinyin, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Serbian, Slovak, Slovenian, Serbian, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish, Turkmen, Uzbek, Vietnamese, Walloon, Welsh.

    Not bad...

    Usability:

I must say that it takes a while (for a QWERTY fan like me) to get used to the new portrait layout, I kept finding myself getting back to the landscape mode where the full QWERTY makes me feel more comfortable, but after a while you really get used to it. After further use they can reach "100% faster typing than the standard phone-pad".

According to Cliquick trials it takes up to 10 sentences of texting until users start typing faster than texting on a phone-pad, and within an hour of texting they already text 50% faster. After further use they can reach "100% faster typing than the standard phone-pad".

We were in a Mobile Monday event when 5 of us (geeks) made a small contest to see which phone gives the fastest typing. I used a full physical QWERTY keyboard and won , but the second best result was done using Cliquick with a significant advantage over the others.

    cliquick_icon4

    Summary:

If you own a WinMo device with a built in full keyboard you don't need Cliquick. But if you are using a device without a full QWERTY, you probably find typing and texting a bit challenging.

Cliquick is an interesting alternative to the standard virtual keyboards but make sure to try it out first.

Another good thing about Cliquick is that it comes with 2 months trial period - enough time to get used to it and really feel the benefits of it.

    How to download:

Cliquick is not free but you may use it with unlimited number of characters input for 60 days. After this period the application would continue working in its full functionality but would be limited by the number of characters per day.

The complete version can be purchased for 9.95$.

    Top Search Keywords

    undertaker

I read in the newspaper today that the most popular keywords (according to Yahoo) were (in this order):

    - Britney Spears

    - WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment)

    - Barack Obama

I can understand the Britney and Barack part but WWE?

Sure I was one of those children that believed the Undertaker is indeed unbeatable but to search for it over the web?

    Strange.

In mobile phones, according to AT&T, the leading keywords are Google, Yahoo, Sports, Facebook, Myspace, and Weather.

No Shawn Michaels, Bret Heart, or Mr. perfect in mobile phone I presume...

    iPhone thoughts - Week #2

    Prisoner_sm

Few weeks ago I finally broke down and purchased an iPhone.

(I felt so bad about it that I even wrote an entire post describing What happens when a WinMo addict breaks his vow and gets an iPhone?)

The first week was amazing. I was captivated by the capacitive screen, mesmerized by the smooth finger gestures, dazzled by the amazing user interface, and became completely addicted to the App Store games.

My first iPhone review (iPhone thoughts - week #1) was mainly positive; I guess I was dazzled so much by entertaining side of the iPhone that I forgot my real needs from a smartphone.

    But things have changed now.

For a few days, I feel like I'm trapped inside this golden cage, giving me so much fun but at the same time - absolutely no freedom to change my home screen, modify my theme, redefine my working tools - customize my phone.

    prisoner copy

I too became an Apple prisoner, just like 'Number Six' trapped inside a wonderful village (springboard), controlled by Apple (the new Number 2) - the only authority, which controls the village and forces all the village people (applications) to look and feel exactly like they are instructed to.

No customizations are allowed, competing applications are being thrown away from the village, and most of all - there's no easy jailbreaking from the village!

And what if someone tries to escape? (i.e. try using Cydia or Installer)

Then I guess the big white Apple ball will capture him and bring him back to the village (try upgrading the OS and you will see...) - beaten and humiliated.

    rover copy

For a WinMo user like me, not being able to fully customize my phone is a problem. I found some "dirty" ways to do some of it, of course, but it always feels like I'm doing something forbidden and that sooner or later I will wake up and ask:

    "Where am I?"
    "In the Village."
    "What do you want?"
    "Information."
    "Whose side are you on?"
"That would be telling…. We want information. Information! INFORMATION!"
    "You won't get it."
"By hook or by crook, we will."
    "Who are you?"
    "The new Number Two."
    "Who is Number One?"
    "You are Number Six."
    "I am not a number — I am a free man!"
    (Laughter from Number Two.)

Here's some other problems I found in my eye-candy iPhone:

    Too little (one...) hardware buttons:

OK, I get it, you want a minimalistic design, I'm cool with that. But how about at least a green 'Send' button and something to 'End' things up with? I really miss those two magic buttons.

Too hard to start a call:

With Windows Mobile or Blackberry, I can start typing the name of the contact and after 1-2 letters I get the contact I want to call.

With the iPhone I must first open it, slide to unlock, click the phone icon, go to favorites and search the screen to locate the right person. If the contact is not in my favorites list then I must use this awkward scroll panel in the right to find the first letter and then scroll to find the contact... It's a disaster, nothing less.

Ironically, the company that brags about usability managed to create a phone where the worst part is making a call.

And getting back to the 'Send' button - I often need to call the same person over and over. I like being able to click on the 'Send' button twice in order to re-make the call. With the iPhone this operation takes far too many clicks.

    prisonerphone

A mobile device from the 60's. Had a built-in 'Send' button...

    Stability:

Everybody is laughing about Microsoft's crashing applications, with the funny message explaining that "a problem occurred and the window must be closed..." but what about Apple?

Well, iPhone applications have the tendency to simply quit whenever they feel like... How come?!

I say: if you really want to crash, go ahead, but how about some sort of a notification? something like: "I am about to crash now, there's nothing you can do about it, but please get ready. Oh, and by the way - would you like to send us the scenario so that we can do absolutely nothing with it?"

The stability problem is very annoying especially when using the Safari browser. I wrote some good things about it, I still like it, but it crashes too many times!

Hey Apple, how about using some try { } catch { } blocks in your code? Ever heard of that concept?

    Speed:

I don't think the performance is bad. But while I was writing this post, my wife, a well known games addict, was playing with my iPhone (I don't like it when she does that... but please don't tell her) and I heard her say: "it's not the fastest thing around... not to say it's pretty slow, don't you think?". Well, I don't think the performance is so bad but there are few things that take too long.

    1. Opening the keyboard (when focusing a text box) takes almost 2 seconds. Not a lot, but enough to feel like you need to "wait" for the keyboard to raise up. Annoying.

    2. Camera - not only I cannot assign a hardware button to the camera (no buttons - remember?) - opening the camera (from the moment I click on the shortcut) takes few long seconds - sometimes up to 8 seconds - which makes capturing special moments - a serious challenge...

    3. Games & Apps - sometimes it takes them too long to open. You don't feel it at first as the screen always displays something (instead of WinMo's hourglass) - but after a while it becomes annoying.

    PIM:

I'm still looking for an application that will give me back my Outlook notes and tasks, as well as a decent way to view and edit Office documents. Not being able to synchronize the phone with my Outlook tasks makes me want to get back to my old WinMo phone.

    Landscape typing:

Here's a classic example why Windows Mobile is still better than iPhone:

Apple invented a great concept of switching between portrait and landscape modes automatically - which makes it much easier to type and browse the Internet. The only problem is - you can't do that with the email application! Brrrrr.

Microsoft, on the other hand, did not think of this brilliant concept, but the devices manufacturer did, and with devices like the Samsung Omnia - you get an automatic rotation for all the applications. Ha!

    See?

OK, before finishing this week's review - I want to say that I still find the iPhone a fascinating device. It's a university for user interface and usability in a lot of aspects, and I haven't finished investigating it. Stay tuned with the next posts in my series "iPhone Thoughts".

I will finish this post with a moment from the cult series: The Prisoner" - Enjoy!

iPhone grabs 30% of U.S. smartphone market

    Microsoft's WinMo continues to decline...

Here's some figures I found in Fortune (Link by WMPowerUsers):

    all

As you can see above, 2008 was the year of the changeovers:

RIM Passed (for the second time actually) Microsoft's market share.

But then came the second half of the year bringing iPhone 3G and another changeover took place, and now Apple's iPhone is leading the chart leaving RIM as second best and Microsoft... well... see the chart for yourself.

But you know what's interesting? this:

    allnokia

Seems like the entire resolution of the chart changes when adding Nokia's Symbian to the scope... hmmm. There is however a decrease in Nokia's performance as well.

Here's the situation in the US market:RIM Continues to lead but Apple is becoming a serious threat for the others...

HTC Acquires ONE & CO - Diamond Designer

    htc-logo hm_logo

I ran across the following news at The Mobile Hornet.

"HTC is announcing the acquisition of the San Francisco based firm One & Company Design, Inc. (One & Co) furthering HTC leadership in design and innovation. One & Co was the company that introduced the iconic design of the HTC Touch Diamond. By acquiring One & Co, HTC world class product development will be further enhanced by creating one of the most advanced mobile design teams in the world."

(I personally think that the diamond is too small and since it doesn't have a built-in physical keyboard - the small screen size makes it way too hard to type with the virtual keyboard).

"Recognized for its award-winning work with some of the world best known and most design-savvy lifestyle brands, One & Co will maintain its name and client base while it joins forces with HTC to create an unparalleled force in global mobile design.  One & Co has been recognized by the design and business communities by winning numerous BusinessWeek/IDSA IDEA Awards, the Good Design Awards, CES Innovation Awards, and ID Magazine awards."

Criticism coming through - move aside please...

    angry

OK, I must complain about Nokia again.

    Sorry...

I simply don't like Symbian and I find it hard to understand why Nokia is so successful around the world. The usability is supposed to be great - but it never felt great to me.

    Nokia E-71:

Now couple of weeks ago I played around with Nokia E-71. To tell you the truth I didn't even bother checking the functionality too much, what I did find is that the keyboard is one of the worst implementation of a QWERTY keyboard I've ever seen!

First - the device is elegant, I must give Nokia the credit for that, but since it's too small (and narrow) - the keyboard is way too tight to be comfortable. The person who is using the phone complained that he just can't type with it. Brrr...

Second - the buttons are too smooth and do not have enough height. As a result - you get a physical QWERTY keyboard that feels more like a virtual keyboard with all the problems of that (inaccuracy and slow speed).

Third - Symbian? Like: seriously you guys? Symbian?

    Nokia N-97:

OK, and now that we've passed that phase, let's move on to the next Nokia device: Nokia kaiser! (Brrr @#$#^ sorry...) Nokia N97!

    200812021941

Now here's a riddle for you all: WHERE THE HELL IS THE SPACE BAR???

You know? That useless little keyboard button used whenever you want to separate between words?

Oh I get it - is it that little button at the right corner? Yep you definitely have something there Nokia - how come no one thought about it so far? Why not locate the space bar on a mouse and call it a day?

Bad Nokia. Go to your room! And while you are in there - bring me a nice WinMo device.

(After thinking about it for a while...)

Ok, I can assume some of the readers may actually find this device pretty hot, and since I must show some objectivity - here's a cool video about the new phone:

Visit the following link for a detailed review of the N-97.

    Palm Continues to Decline

    palm_logo

I was sad to read another negative post about Palm, this time in MobilitySite.

You all know my personal feelings about Palm's Treo and specifically the Treo Pro, but I guess Darren Humphries is right. Palm is lost somewhere in-between too many problems. (see a similar post I wrote few months ago about it...).

Couple of days ago I picked up one of my oldest PDAs (the first one was an iPAQ, the second was Palm Treo 600, then I started working with Windows Mobile and moved to civilization).

hst600_01 I had to fill the battery and after few hours I opened up the Treo 600 and played with it for a while.

I still think that they design of the OS along with the device gives a perfect single hand navigation through the tabs, views, and button.

The keyboard is sooooo horrible, and the screen resolution seems like ancient history.

Still, brought up some nice memories.

    FreewarePlease copy

Many readers of this blog are looking for some free Windows Mobile apps (I can see that using Google Analytics whih gives some very nice statistics of the users preferences).

So I decided to dedicate a post on some links which I think can be useful whenever you are looking for Windows Mobile freeware.

    Links inside the Mobile Spoon:

For some of my personal recommendations - click the SpoonMan Recommends link. Those posts include only the things which I think are essential for Windows Mobile users.

For the entire list of freeware which I reviewed here at the Mobile Spoon - click on the All Freewares link.

Here's some other resources I'm using for Windows Mobile freeware:

And the best Smartphone in the world is...

    DA-KNOCKOUT01

Almost 2 weeks ago I created a poll under the title "What is the best Smartphone in the world?".

My idea was to see what is the most desirable device according to the readers of the MobileSpoon and much bigger blogs such as MobilitySite, TiltMobility and other friends.

After all, the "best smartphone" is a subjective term - so what's better than just asking the power users?

    The question was:

If price and operator were not part of your considerations:

    Which Smartphone would you purchase?

Under the list of answers I included Palm, Asus, iPhone, HTC, Samsung, BlackBerry, Sony Ericsson - all the latest and greatest - and remember - price was not to be considered.

The results are pretty amazing. A total knock-out. A defeat!

    HD knockout copy

HTC's Touch Pro and Touch HD got (together) 64% of the votes!

    Amazing don't you think?

Indeed a crushing victory for HTC!

    results2

Check out the complete list in here.

The winner is actually the Touch Pro (34%), second place goes to Touch HD (30%) and the third place goes to Sony Ericsson XPeria with a nice achievement (but with only 10%... far away from the first two).

    winner copy

Notice that BlackBerry did very bad in the poll (Bold and Storm got only 3% together...), and so did the iPhone (probably since not many iPhone users are reading these blogs...).

My favorite Treo-Pro got only 10 votes (one of them is mine...) but the only device that did not receive any vote at all was Palm Centro with a clear 0 votes... hmm...

And getting back to HTC: I was certain that the HD will win the contest. After all - it is the manliest gadget of 2008 right? But I guess a physical keyboard is still one of the most important thing in a mobile device and so HTC Touch Pro is the winner and is the undisputed best smartphone in the world!!!

    htc-touch-pro-3

    And a personal request:

HTC: if you are reading this post, I think I deserve brand new HD and Pro devices (OK, I settle for just one of them... pretty please?).

After all - I need to know the phone that just won the title "best in the world" - in person, right?

(Say yes! Say yes! I promise to write a fair review about it!)

    Comments Mechanism Fixed

    online_friends_comment_10

I received some feedback from Pony99CA that my comments mechanism didn't work properly.

First - I would like to thank you all for commenting to my blog posts. I wish people would react more and also share some interesting ideas and thoughts. I always read the comments and try to improve the MobileSpoon based on them.

Also - in case you want to share some news or ideas - I invite you all to send them to me - the relevant ones will be published with the details of the source and a link to your site (if you wish).

Blogger is a cool platform for blogs, but it has some bugs every now and then. I hope the comments will work better from now on.

Looking forward to read your comments!

    twitter-addicts[1]

I personally don't use Twitter, but if you do - here's a nice summary of the best Twitter clients available in Windows Mobile.

The review was written by WindowsMobileCool and includes:

    1. ceTwit,

    2. Twitter Answers,

    3. GPS Twit,

    4. Quakk,

    5. TwitToday .

As I said, I can't tell you how good they really are - but read the nice post and check for yourself.

And since we already mentioned those 5 Twitter apps, here's some other useful links in case you are interested:
