Lost your WinMo phone? You can find it with WM GoHome!

zn0oy8

Here's something cool I found in OldSAP's blog.

WM GoHome is a "hidden" application that will be activated only when receiving a special SMS.

The application also includes a remote control via SMS, and claims that it will somehow switch modes in case the SIM card will be replaced (in case the device is stolen) - which means continues support even after switching the SIM card.

Here's some of the documentation found in the developer's site:

"WM GoHome is application works like service. It is waiting for special SMS message that processing depends on the parameters sent in this message. After receiving this message, WMGH (WM GoHome) initialize GPS receiver and sends SMS message with current location, altitude and speed to the phone number, it received the initialization message from.

WM GoHome is mainly intended for localization of the device, but it can do much more.

Via special SMS messages you can easy control the remote device. WMGH can start predefined applications, can change the device configuration or send another information to the predefined phone numbers.

A lot of users asked us 'What happens, if a device will be stolen and thief will change the SIM card?' The answer is: WM GoHome will detect that current SIM card is not authorized and switch itself to the attention mode. In that mode is not possible configure the application anymore, and in this mode will WMGH send the SMS to the authorized Change SIM Tracker with the information about the new SIM phone number. Then it is possible to localize device again"

Check out the developer's site for more information

Mobile Spoon Feeding - Palm Pre, iPhone

spoonfeeding6 OK friends, you know I cannot wait to put my hands on one of those cool Palm Pre.

Until I manage to do so, here's some new information I found about the upcoming device, followed by some iPhone news.

Palm Pre's Camera:

cam Well, although it is just 3.2 megapixel it includes the latest imaging correction software from DxO Labs (leading player in the field of image analysis and correction).

It will improve significantly the quality of the images, especially for close-up pictures which are usually problematic.

The Adaptive Lighting will give a much brighter and better picture in low light conditions (hey, I think the iPhone does that too! Sue them Apple!)

You can read much more and see some example picture in here.

Prelauncher Pre to be released during February?

I guess not, but there are tons of rumors out there, and you know rumors, there's always behind them...

Boy, I sure cannot wait for February to end!

Mobile Spoon Presents: January's Favorites!

Mobilespoon_Effect4

January is just about to end and I figured it's a good time to summarize this month's most popular posts:

A lot of tweaks related to Windows Mobile and especially the Touch Pro were released during January (and also December), the popularity of those posts in general was high.

All the tweaks can be found under the label Tweaks.

If you are looking for HTC stuff specifically, use the Diamond or Pro labels. They will probably take you where you want to go.

But enough with that, here's the 5 most popular posts of the month:

Number #5: Palm Pre - WebOS User Interface Video Tour

small_Palm_Pre This one is simply a great video demonstration of the amazing upcoming Palm Pre with the new operating system which is threatening to give a good fight to the iPhone!

Number #4: Tweak- Spice things up in your WinMo Task Bar with 'Colored Top Bar'

This cool freeware will add some colors to the standard task bar.

Number #2: PalmPre vs. iPhone vs. WinMo vs. Android vs. BlackBerry - Fight!

runble

This post caused me a lot of troubles with the great friends over at MobilitySite. I wrote the post in there as well, and some Android dudes which obviously did not like the results of it, decided to fight back. The result was around 40 furious comments to the post, few of them included personal accusations only real gadgets geeks can write...

But we don't mind, right? 3.39% of the entire page views of this month belongs to this article. Here's the post.

Number #1

small_HTC copy The undisputed number #1 post of this month is the one with 6.87% page views: 10 tips for true happiness with HTC Touch Pro / Fuze / Diamond!

Great, so most of the readers probably read this already, but in case not - now is the time to check it out!

Is that windows Mobile 6.5 running on HTC Touch Pro?

winmo

OK, it's not. I don't want to deceive you guys, but I just had to see how the new WinMo (supposedly) design may look like on my Touch Pro...

I just saw that more 6.5 images continue to roll and here's the latest stuff I found at the XDA-Developers:

333-1

Are they real?

I'm not sure. I can definitely imagine some lonely photoshop designer having a great laugh on all of us right now...

Is WinMo 6.5 going to look like that, eventually?

I bet not. From my experience as a UI developer I can say that there's always the last minute "fine tune" work which involves fonts, icons, and other cosmetic work. In addition, as this is a localized beta version migrated to an older device - it cannot be an indication of the real thing, just a direction.

Let's see what we can learn from it:

Lock Screen:

5Nice.

I'm not a huge fan of the iPhone lock screen, it's annoying and I wish I could remove it. Here, it seems like the time is located in an unusual position (too low), not sure I like it...

Honeycomb screen:

4Cool stuff, I think it's nice, even though it's not as amazing as the stuff we've seen from Palm Pre.

Notice there's a cut cell in the bottom, indicating that this screen can include a lot of items and probably a way to scroll them using a finger gesture.

I think it's a refreshing addition to the basic 'Today' screen.

Today Screen:

1

Not sure I know how to react to that.

On one hand - the expandable gradient/transparent panels look nice (I sure like it in the standard edition). On the other hand, it currently cannot match SPB Mobile Shell or the TouchFlo 3D.

I can only assume that the final user interface will look more like the standard edition, which means much better...

 imgC1 img15

Internet Explorer

Naturally there's not much to say in regards to the actual browsing experience, but we can spot a zoom bar, and the bottom area that includes couple of icons a-la-iPhone. Nice.

Oh, one more thing: notice the transparency of the top bar which looks like Vista (which I actually don't like so much...)

3  2

Those 2 screenshots are yet another example that the UI is not finalized yet: I assume the actual release will have better icons and better looking 'X' button...

Overall, I'm not too impressed, but I'm optimistic. I believe the official 6.5 user interface will have a lot of cool improvements.

Tower Defense games, gymnastics, and one bad addiction

Today at the gym, while others were doing this:

body-builder

I was doing this:

fiueld (playing...)

I know, it's not exactly what you are supposed to do in a gym, but I'm addicted.

I'm addicted to tower defense games. Especially Field Runner.

If (like me few weeks ago) you never heard the term Tower Defense before, here's some Wiki stuff:

"The goal is to try to stop enemies from crossing the map by building towers which shoot at them as they pass. Enemies and towers usually have varied abilities and costs. When an enemy is defeated the player earns money or points, which are used to buy or upgrade towers".

I see it as a combination of a strategy game (but a very basic one) with some elements of luck and gambling.

The result is a great way to pass the time but also a horrible way to waste important time.

In any event, here's some of the games I liked under this genre:

Field runner:

IMG_0006 (1)

IMG_0007

Field runner is the first iPhone game I'm actually playing!

I have installed over 100 games but nothing was really worth spending time on.

But all of this has changed now, I'm totally addicted to this great game. It has good animation, fantastic sounds, perfect user interface which makes it a perfect game for me.

IMG_0008

The thing that makes this game so great is that you control the course of the enemies as you can simply design a path/maze where they will have to walk through. (see video below)

Creeps:

OK, so now that I'm totally addicted to tower defense games, I was certain it will be easy to find lot's of great games from this genre.

Well, I was wrong. There are plenty of BAD ONES. iPhone has few more which I immediately deleted, and winMo actually does not have so many alternatives.

One good alternative for the iPhone, is the Creeps.

IMG_0002

Creeps is really great as well. The path is given, but you have to not only defend the bed, but also to destroy some fixed elements in order to make room for more weapon.

IMG_0005  IMG_0003 (2)

It has some great sounds as well, and it's a lot of fun.

The game includes many levels and a lot of weapons, which is also fun.

IMG_0004

TapDefense (the only freeware in this post...)

tapdefense_tower tapdefense

TapDefense is the free alternative for Tower Defense games (iPhone). It was promoted as the best free iPhone game in 2008, but I have to admit I think that Field Runner is much better mainly due to the ease of operating the game and user interface.

I started using TapDefense but stopped after a short while... who can play it when Field Runner is installed?

Nevertheless, if you are looking for something completely free, this is an option.

TapDefense is freely available for download in App Store. You can download it via this direct link.

2 Windows Mobile alternatives:

If you are looking for a TD game for windows mobile, here's the only ones I found so far that looks cool:

Azgard Defence

From the developers MoreGames Entertainment, who has made great games for our Pocket PCs like Orions: Legend of Wizards and Enslave, here's the winMo TD game called Azgard Defence.

azgard-defence-2

It's not so new, but looks like it has a lot of features:

* Over 20 creatures: Demons, Ogres, Ghosts, Dragons, Knights, etc.
* 15 Tower types, each with it's own attack. This includes Poison, Corruption, Fire, Splash, Slow, and more.
* Level Editor to build your own maps.
* Amazing visuals, particles, explosions.
* Save/Load at any time.
* Music, Sound effects, Levels of diffuculty, etc - just everything to make sure that you will enjoy this game at a maximum.

azgard_defence_pocket_pc1

You can try Azgard Defence for yourself here or buy it from ClickGamer.

Resco Defender

This one is another alternative, although I must admit it doesn't look so great.

Nevertheless, here's some screenshots and a link, in case you want to try it out:

defender_02 defender_00

Check out Resco Defender

That's it for today, I'm off, have to take my daily Field Runner doze...

Gartner Report: Technologies to watch for the next two years

gartner

The Gartner's analysts just published a list of eight technologies to watch for the next two years.

Here's the items in short:

Gartner’s eight mobile technologies to watch in 2009 and 2010

  1. Bluetooth 3.0 —The Bluetooth 3.0 specification will be released in 2009 (at which point its feature set will be frozen), with devices starting to arrive around 2010. Bluetooth 3.0 will likely include features such as ultra-low-power mode that will enable new devices, such as peripherals and sensors, and new applications, such as health monitoring. Bluetooth originated as a set of protocols operating over a single wireless bearer technology. Bluetooth 3.0 is intended to support three bearers: "classic" Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and ultrawideband (UWB). It's possible that more bearers will be supported in the future. Wi-Fi is likely to be a more important supplementary bearer than UWB in the short term, because of its broad availability. Wi-Fi will allow high-end phones to rapidly transfer large volumes of data.
  2. Mobile User Interfaces (UIs) — UIs have a major effect on device usability and supportability. They will also be an area of intense competition in 2009 and 2010, with manufacturers using UIs to differentiate their handsets and platforms. New and more-diverse UIs will complicate the development and support of business-to-employee (B2E) and business-to-consumer (B2C) applications. Organizations should expect more user demands for support of specific device models driven by interface preferences. Companies should also expect consumer interfaces to drive new expectations of application behavior and performance. Better interfaces will make the mobile Web more accessible on small devices, and will be a better channel to customers and employees.
  3. Location Sensing — Location awareness makes mobile applications more powerful and useful; in the future, location will be a key component of contextual applications. Location sensing will also enhance systems, such as mobile presence and mobile social networking. The growing maturity of on-campus location sensing using Wi-Fi opens up a range of new applications exploiting the location of equipment or people. Organizations delivering business or consumer applications should explore the potential of location sensing; however, exploiting it may create new privacy and security challenges.
  4. 802.11n — 802.11n boosts Wi-Fi data rates to between 100 Mbps and 300 Mbps, and the multiple-input, multiple-output technology used by 802.11n offers the potential for better coverage in some situations. 802.11n is likely to be a long-lived standard that will define Wi-Fi performance for several years. High-speed Wi-Fi is desirable to stream media around the home and office. From an organizational perspective, 802.11n is disruptive; it's complex to configure, and is a "rip and replace" technology that requires new access points, new client wireless interfaces, new backbone networks and a new power over Ethernet standard. However, 802.11n is the first Wi-Fi technology to offer performance on a par with the 100 Mbps Ethernet commonly used for wired connections to office PCs. It is, therefore, an enabler for the all-wireless office, and should be considered by companies equipping new offices or replacing older 802.11a/b/g systems in 2009 and 2010.
  5. Display Technologies — Displays constrain many characteristics of both mobile devices and applications. During 2009 and 2010, several new display technologies will impact the marketplace, including active pixel displays, passive displays and pico projectors. Pico projectors enable new mobile use cases (for example, instant presentations projected on a desktop to display information in a brief, face-to-face sales meeting). Battery life improvements are welcome for any user. Good off-axis viewing enables images and information to be shared more easily. Passive displays in devices, such as e-book readers, offer new ways to distribute and consume documents. Display technology will also become an important differentiator and a user selection criterion.
  6. Mobile Web and Widgets — The mobile Web is emerging as a low-cost way to deliver simple mobile applications to a range of devices. It has some limitations that will not be addressed by 2010 (for example, there will be no universal standards for browser access to handset services, such as the camera or GPS). However, the mobile Web offers a compelling total cost of ownership (TCO) advantage over thick-client applications. Widgets (small mobile Web applets) are supported by many mobile browsers, and provide a way to stream simple feeds to handsets and small screens. Mobile Web applications will be a part of most B2C mobile strategies. Thin-client applications are also emerging as a practical solution to on-campus enterprise applications using Wi-Fi or cellular connections.
  7. Cellular Broadband — Wireless broadband exploded in 2008, driven by the availability of technologies such as high-speed downlink packet access and high-speed uplink packet access, combined with attractive pricing from cellular operators. The performance of high-speed packet access (HSPA) provides a megabit or two of bandwidth in uplink and downlink directions, and often more. In many regions, HSPA provides adequate connectivity to replace Wi-Fi "hot spots," and the availability of mature chipsets enables organizations to purchase laptops with built-in cellular modules that provide superior performance to add-on cards or dongles.
  8. Near Field Communication (NFC) — NFC provides a simple and secure way for handsets to communicate over distances of a centimeter or two. NFC is emerging as a leading standard for applications such as mobile payment, with successful trials conducted in several countries. It also has wider applications, such as "touch to exchange information" (for example, to transfer an image from a handset to a digital photo frame, or for a handset to pick up a virtual discount voucher). Gartner does not expect much of the NFC payment or other activities to become common, even by 2010, in mature markets, such as Western Europe and the U.S. NFC is likely to become important sooner in emerging markets, with some deployments starting by 2010.

Asus P565 video review- worth watching

asus-p565-handset-lg

Hey, the fastest WinMo phone is here, and GadgetMix did a comprehensive review about it.

Head over to GadgetMix and check out a lot of pictures and details about the new device.

pc_capture112 pc_capture102

The reviewer specifically mentioned the screen sensitivity which feels great (see video as well). It's about time they make a smooth touch screen like they used to be few years ago.

It does, however, seems like the glide user interface is not yet polished (but we knew that already, right?)

Will be interesting to install the TouchFlo 3D on this device and check the speed of it...

pc_capture162 pc_capture152

Here's the summary of the review:

Pros:

  • Great professional design
  • Leather finish is a great touch. It gives it a premium device feeling for sure
  • Flushed screen
  • Responsive screen
  • Speedy processor (Intel PXA930 800MHz)
  • Auto-Focus 3MP camera takes decent pictures
  • Quite light at 120gm
  • Nice included case

Cons:

  • Glide interface requires a lot of work to be done
  • It may be the fastest Windows Mobile, but no way the fastest PDA-phone.
  • Micro-SD slot not easily accessible
  • Only 56MB of free RAM after bootup out of total 128MB RAM
  • 5MP cameras are on the rage right now although the 3MP camera in it performs quite nicely
  • No 3.5mm headphone jack

10 tips for true happiness with HTC Touch Pro / Fuze / Diamond!

TOUCH_PRO copy

For a couple of weeks I've been using HTC Touch Pro.

HTC Touch Pro is considered to be one of the best WinMo devices today. It has a strong processor, GPS, WiFi and 3G, beautiful VGA screen, it's loaded with HTC's additions, one of them, of course, is the TouchFlo 3D shell, and it has a built-in QWERTY keyboard.

Oh, and it runs Windows Mobile, which means you can not just play with it, but also work with it.

Sounds perfect, isn't it? hmm... well... not 100% accurate.

Similar to HTC's Touch Diamond, the Pro has some... say... issues.

I know many winMo power users love this device (or the Fuze), but I found some areas which really bothered me. Areas of funcitonality where it doesn't feel perfectly tuned or 100% implemented.

But, don't be sad boys and girls, because we are talking Windows Mobile here, and like any WinMo stuff - it has hacks, and tweaks! And most of them are completely free! And working as well!

So, I would like to summarize the main things I found in this short guide. We'll call it:

10 tips for true happiness with HTC Touch Pro!

BTW: Many of the tips relate to HTC's Touch Pro, Diamond, Fuze and HD, few of them will work on any WinMo device as well.

#1. Device updates:

Whether you own a Diamond, Pro or HD (you lucky you!) the first thing you need to do is check HTC's web site. There's a good chance you will find an update that needs to be installed on your device. It's better to do it before anything else.

#2. Speed and screen sensitivity:

The first thing I noticed was that the Pro works s l o w . . .

So slow I actually considered removing TouchFlo and install SPB Mobile Shell instead.

The second thing I felt was that the screen is no sensitive enough, as if it's too tough, beyond other WinMo devices.

Diamond TF3D Config is a free configuration tool that lets you modify a lot of registry keys which control the device.

Some of the configurable parameters are: TouchFlo Tabs order, performance, themes, screen sensitivity and more.

Note that some of the parameters can also be modified using Advanced Configuration Tool.

Download Diamond TF3D Config

#3. Auto rotation for all applications with GSen

The HTC devices come with a G Sensor, but for some reason there's no automatic rotation in most of the applications, which is a shame.

If you want to have automatic rotation (using the G Sensor) for all the applications and not just the image viewer, this one is for you.

I personally don't use this one, I prefer rotating the screen when I slide out the keyboard, but I know many people liked it.

Download GSen

#4. Turn your Pro into an iPod!

aaa Another limitation I cannot understand; since HTC invested in the smart wheel and placed it in the device, why not use it in all applications?

The smart wheel of the Pro/Diamond is pretty useless as it only works only for zooming images and web, right?

EMMMM! Wrong!

There's a way to make the scroll wheel (located in the device D-Pad) act like similar to the iPod and scroll through long lists and many applications!

The way is to use a tool called Diamond Tweak.

To download - jump over to montecristoff and check out their great tools.

#5. FingerMenu

pc_capture3 HTC certainly tried to turn their 'Touch' devices into a completely finger friendly phones. The lists can be scrolled using finger gestures and the TouchFlo shell is designed for finger use.

The menus font size was also modified, but in case it's not enough for your finger size - FingerMenu is a cool freeware that turns all the WinMo menus into a fancy finger friendly menus. I like it.

Download FingerMenu

#6. Missing OK hardware button? Let's fix it:

This is a funny one, after searching half of the web, looking for a way to re-map the Pro's hardware buttons, I was certain nothing works (all the usual tools failed to do it). But then I accidentally found that the 'Back' button actually acts as an 'OK' button whenever the dialog has one.

And to think I wasted so much time wondering around different forums full of people complaining about it...

Read more in here...

#7. Cannot easily navigate right with the D-Pad? Here's why:

I didn't find a way to fix it, but obviously there's a problem with the D-Pad of the Diamond/Pro/Fuze. I think it's the entire front surface is bad.

There's an area which will not work properly, but as you can see below, it's all a matter of pressing in the right area...

dpad2-300x218 dpad12-300x218

Read more about it in here...

#8. Sufer from a GPS lag? It can be fixed:

3009497196_852aeb57ac There are many explanations about aGPS and how it can ruin the GPS experience instead of helping.

I found that using QuickGPS solved my issues, but there's another tip which explains how to turn off aGPS. This is better for some areas I assume...

The complete guide can be found in here.

#9. FuzeBerry Theme from MobileMatt

Preview_FuzeBerry

I tried couple of different themes for the TouchFlo user interface, MobileMatt's FuzeBerry is my favorite one!

Not only It's beautiful, it also adds 2-3 tabs to the shell which is a great addition!

Link: MobileMatt

#10. Recovering the standard Today Screen

Screen27 Call me old fashion, but even though I got used to the TouchFlo, I still miss my good old Today screen, and my favorite plugins which cannot be placed inside the TouchFlo UI.

For that, I found a way to work with both TouchFlo and Today screen using a freeware called 'SecondToday'. I got some comments about the availability of additional freeware with the same capability, but the concept is to actually have 2 Today screens, one with the TouchFlo and the second with the usual plugins.

Download SecondToday

Bonus tips!

Some more cool tweaks for HTC Touch Diamond/Pro/ Fuze:

Colored Top Bar

screen09vf9dh0

This one is a nice one (but not that important). Once you install it your top bar becomes colorful.

Read more in here

Wanna show off with your HTC device? Here's a silly way:

Screen24 Cool useless trick to run the entire weather animation with a click.

To activate:

1. Switch to the Weather tab.

2. Tap to the left of where it says “Weather” at the top.

3. Now tap to the right of where it says “Weather.”

Show me one iPhone that does that!

thetwostevesWindows Mobile outsold the iPhone in Q4 2008

According to Steve Ballmer, in the recent earnings conference call, more than 5 million Windows Mobile units were sold in Q4 2008.  More than the 4.4 million iPhones sold announced in Apple’s own earnings release.

Who is the world's biggest computer maker in 2008?

According to Tomi T Ahonen, if you consider a smartphone to be a mini computer, then Nokia is world's biggest computer maker in 2008 (say what?).

Tomi combined different analysis reports and came up with the following figures:

Nokia     64.1 Million units   13.8% market share
HP         55.2 Million units   11.9% market share
Dell        43.8 Million units     9.4% market share
Apple     35.0 Million units     7.5% market share
Acer       30.8 Million units     6.6% market share
Lenovo   22.1 Million units    4.7% market share
RIM         19.8 Million units    4.2% market share
Toshiba  12.9 Million units    2.8% market share
Others  181.9 Million units  39.1% market share

    Total    465.5 Million units 100.0%

(The list does not include cell-phones, just smartphones and PDAs and there are couple of assumptions in the list, mainly around Apple, read more in here).

Amir, as usual, thanks for the tip!

Are you having GPS lag on your Touch Pro?

    3009497196_852aeb57ac 3009498360_41cd5e2c93

I did, couple of times, but for me Quick GPS solved most of the issues. I just need to remember and download the data every couple of days...

If your issues are not being solved by the Quick GPS, here's a good article explaining the cause of the GPS lag problem (aGPS) and how to fix it (disable it of course)!

    Follow the link and enjoy!

(of course this tweak will work on Diamond as well...)

iPhone: How to display calendar information when there's no 'Today' screen?

    At last!

One of the greatest features Windows Mobile has is being able to view the most important information in a snapshot (via the Today screen).

The iPhone may have a nicer user interface, but when it comes to checking out phone information, appointments, and tasks - it is missing the great Today Screen.

Today I found a nice freeware that adds the upcoming appointments to the lock screen of the iPhone.

Not perfect yet (cannot add today plug-ins...) but critically important for me!

    lock_calendar

The application is called: Lock Calendar and it can be downloaded using Cydia.

W.V.D. Web Video Downloader for Windows Mobile

    screen1

One of the things I hate with YouTube videos is the fact that it requires a WiFi connection, even if I want to see a video I already saw...

    - Support search results by detail or thumbnail.
    - Support thumbnail animation to preview videos.
    - Allows to stream* or download videos from websites.
    - Support many video formats.

Requirement: Microsoft .Net Compact Framework 2.0.

I must say it looks much better than the previous pictures. Probably because of the fonts.

Apple vs. Palm - the quarrel continues

    cuise

HTC has announced the HTC Iolite, as the new Touch Cruise.

HTC clearly focused on location based services and GPS navigation in this device. It comes with a built in button for navigation, and has a new feature called HTC Footprint (the ability to create geo-tags on the fly using the camera, notes, audio notes etc.

Peter Chou, President and CEO of HTC, said:

“Just as we have seen GPS technology transform how people navigate to new places, we are now seeing location-based applications like HTC Footprints changing how we interact and carry our memories,”

Here's a short video explaining the Footprint feature:

    I like it.

As can be seen in the video, the GPS navigation starts automatically when placing the device on a bundled car cradle. The user interface in such case is "replacing" itself to include large buttons just like any GPS navigation, since it should be used while sitting in the car.

    Here's some Specifications:

    • Size: 102 x 53.5 x 14.5mm
    • Weight: 103 grams
    • Connectivity: WCDMA/HSPA: 900/2100MHz. HSDPA 7.2 Mbps
    • Operating system: Windows Mobile® 6.1 Professional
    • Display: 2.8-inch TFT-LCD touch-sensitive screen with QVGA resolution
    • Control panel: HTC TouchFLO™, 4-Way navigation wheel with Enter and HTC Footprints™ buttons
    • Camera: 3.2 MP, with fixed focus
    • Internal memory: 512 MB flash ROM, 256 MB RAM
    • Expansion Slot: microSD™ memory card (SD 2.0 compatible)
    • Bluetooth: 2.0 with EDR
    • Wireless: Wi-Fi 802.11b/g
    • GPS: GPS/A-GPS
    • Interface: HTC ExtUSBä (mini-USB 2.0 and audio jack in one)
    • Battery: 1100 mAh
    • Talk time: GSM: up to 400 minutes
    • Standby time: GSM: up to two weeks
    • Chipset: Qualcomm® MSM7225™, 528 MHz

Reasons why I'm about to remove my FeedBurner subscribers count widget

    Well, mainly because of this:

    feedsss

And also - because of this:

    feeds

I have no idea where did my 250 subscribers suddenly disappear.

In addition, you have to admit the statistics are a bit twisted around... it's hard to understand a graph that shows 116 and 172 at the same point. (not to mention that the above value has usually the lower number which is confusing...

Ever since I moved my feeds to my Google account (they bought FeedBurner) things are not working.

I don't have any way to tell how many subscribers I really have, except for the fact I remember having 250 subscribers couple of days ago...

    Bummer.

    Windows Mobile 6.5 is here!

screenshot3-228x300 OK people! Time for some screenshots and a video of the new upcoming version of Windows Mobile!

(Of course - it may be that all of it is a fraud, but by the history of the XDA-Developers, I actually find it reliable)

    Let's start with some explanations:

The phone you will see in the video demo is not a new device, it's actually an ancient device called: Blue Angel and used to run Windows Mobile 2003 (actually called PocketPC 2003).

This device is one of the strongest ones ever made, and considered to be a perfect instrument for hackers or WinMo professionals such as the XDA-Developers. According to some rumors it is the true Kaiser Soze of the mobile world.

OK. I invented that part, but as you'll immediatly see (below) this old device can run any WinMo version including the latest one - 6.5!

Appearently, there's this guy at HTC which really likes to spread around "spoilers" and sent the new version to one of the XDA people.

    Now let's see some screenshots:

As you can see below (thank god WMPowerUsers were able to pull those pictures for us, as it was not trivial at all to find them in the non-english sites...)

Check out those cool images. Windows Mobile 6.5!

    pic01 pic06 pic141 pic03 pic6 pic11

Remember - things may look slighlty different on newer devices as this one is not optimized for that this WinMo version of course (or just because it may be an evil fraud, as I said earlier, but who know...)

OK, let's discuss what we've just saw:

First, the today screen looks more like the standard edition which is a great enhancement.

Second, the scrollable lists - which looks like the iPhone scrolling capabilities - great stuff but we've seen other applications already doing it (SPB, as well as other freeware etc.) - not sure it's such an inovative thing, but it seems (from the video) that it is working more natively as it's a built-in feature now. Useful feature.

Third, and this can be seen in another video (link) - is the new version of the internet explorer. I found it hard to understand what I'm seeing as the video quality is very low, but it seem some new features around finger movements, zoom etc.

Not sure I can say anything about it now, I guess we just have to wait and see when it is officially released...

    Overall?

I'm a bit dissapointed, but I'm hoping we haven't seen the most of it just yet...

    And now, here's the video:

(if you cannot see it - click here)

    Thoughts anyone? Please share.

Users unhappy with their mobile phone...

    exeda-front copy

According to a poll of 4000 people done by Mformation, 61% of mobile users (UK and US) said setting up a new handset is as challenging as moving bank accounts.

85% of users said they are frustrated by the difficulty of getting a new phone up and working.

And 95% said they would try more new services if phones were easier to set up.

According to Mformation spokesman Matthew Bancroft:

"There is an enormous range of things modern phones are capable of doing but the paradox is that many people are not using these capabilities," he said.

Nice. (I wonder if it relates the Palm Pre making automatic decisions for the happy users).

For us, mobile geeks, things may seem obvious, but whenever I give one of my devices to a friend (for instance when I want to share a nice game or show some applications or pictures), I'm always surprised that they find it hard to operate stuff.

I think that like Windows in the 90's, mobile UI is still progressing, and each new application / concept / device teaches us more about what's wrong and what's right.

Applications influence one another and the good things quickly spread around to most of the mobile applications. (A great example, of course is some of the iPhone UI concepts).

Eventually, just like most people know how to save a word document using that old diskette icon (many users never even saw one...), and just like everyone knows F5 will probably perform some lkind of refresh, people will eventually know how to better find their way around in mobile applications.

LG Surpasses Motorola to Become Third-Largest Handset Maker

    goodbymotoe

Hello Moto! Time to wake up fix some problems...

LG Electronics (LGE) shipped over 100 million handsets (smartphones and cellphones) in 2008, surpassing the amounts shipped by Motorola and Sony Ericsson, respectively, to capture, for the first time, third place in the global handset market.

Nokia continues to lead (big time) as Samsung continues to be in the second place.

The mobile quarrel - the poll continues...

    runble

Couple of days ago I published the poll:

PalmPre vs. iPhone vs. WinMo vs. Android vs. BlackBerry - Round #2 - Fight!

The poll was a result of some nasty comments I got here (and mostly in MobilitySite) about my comparison between all the "hot phones", which were posted by some Android fans, complaining about the 0.3 points that I gave to the Android.

couple of days after publishing the poll, good time to check how we are doing:

    Question #1:

Which mobile operating system is the best one, in your opinions?

    poll1

Wow! Can it be that iPhone is taking over?

After all, this is mainly a Windows Mobile blog, most of the posts here talk about WinMo stuff, apps and freeware.

Can it be that Windows Mobile users actually yearn to get an iPhone?

Should I start writing about iPhone some more?

    Question #2:

If you could have 2 devices, which one (OS) would you prefer as your second one?

poll2Wow! iPhone rules here as well.

What is hapenning here at the Mobile Spoon?

Should I change the name of the blog to iPhone Spoon?

Nope, probably not, but still, interesting to see the users opinion.

Coming second is the Palm Pre which certainly looks amazing, but not yet released.

If you don't agree with this poll, go on and vote, and change the results! (Link)

Butler: Launching applications with finger strokes

HTC newest devices come with only 4 hardware buttons which are very hard to re-assign.

For many of us WinMo users, this is a serious lack of functionality, but as always, the XDA-Developers come to the rescue!

Butler, is a freeware designed to map different applications launching to a finger gesture done in the bottom area of HTC Touch Diamond / Pro.

This area uses a capacitive technology which apparently has an API.

    img35

    Here's what Butler does:

    "

    - Better vibration for incoming calls. I found the built-in vibration function very annoying as it vibrates permanently during an incoming call. This extensions vibrates in pulses of 300 ms with a pause of one second when a call is incoming

    - SIP changer depending on stylus state. If stylus is out, another soft input panel is selected as if stylus is in. Can be changed via the registry keys StylusInSIP and StylusOutSIP.

    - Stroke Launcher. If the finger is stroked from one button to another, an application is launched. Four directions are possible: From home button to accept phone call button and vice versa as well as from back button to reject phone call button and vice versa. The applications can be configured via the RightUpApp, RightDownApp, LeftUpApp and LeftDownApp registry keys. The required length of the stroke can be configured via the GestureMinLen registry key. Unfortunately, the program has to poll HTC's NAV sensor directly in order to not disturb the functionality of the wheel sensor. The sleep time between two polls can be configured with the GesturePollingDelay (in ms). If you use very fast strokes and the device does not react, try to decrease this value.

    - Key lock if device is face down. The key lock is activated and the device is powered off if it is turned face down. The key locked is acknowledged by two short vibrations. Key lock can be disabled depending on the foreground window or active process list. Exclude list can be specified via the ExcludedProcesses and ExcludedWindows registry keys. The tolerance for the face down detection can be configured via the FacedownTolerance registry key.
The registry settings for Buttler are stored in HKLM\Software\Butler. Each extension described above can be switched of by setting the EnableFeature registry key to 0.

    "

Still requires some admin work I assume, as you need to manually configure the settings via a registry editor.

    Fix incomplete contacts with Scrub

    Scrub1

Some of you are familiar with Trinket who brought us the PowerSMS.

Scrub is another small utility that can help you manage your contacts.

Since many of us hold a list of contacts which comes from different sources, many of the items miss some important information.

Scrub helps finding the missing information and complete it.

    Quote from the developer's site:

"Scrub is a small Windows Mobile® utility to detect missing information such as email addresses, home or work phone numbers, addresses and birthdays from your contacts. It can quickly scan all the contacts on your device, and group them by the type of information missing.

    Why do I need it?
    • Firstly, it's useful as an organizational tool - especially if you like to filter contacts by Category or Company.
    • Secondly, it can improve your safety by checking whether you have sufficient communication options to reach your friends and family in case of an emergency.
    • Thirdly, it helps you ensure that you've captured the full names, numbers and email addresses of the people you meet when networking socially.
    • Finally, it's interesting to use when you're bored and have nothing better to do on your phone.
Why is it free? Is it ad-supported or are there any caveats?

It's 100% free; there are no ads or any other caveats. We initially made it as an add-on to our other apps, which rely on your contact information being up to date. However, since it was a relatively small effort to create, we decided to make it free for everyone.

If you like Scrub, check out our other useful apps for Windows Mobile®. "

Introducing Gecko - application installer and manager for Windows Mobile

Here's something I found in my favorite WinMo blog: WMPowerUsers:

Gecko is a free application designed to help Windows Mobile users to download and install applications more easily.

It is inspired from the AppStore of course, and for now it is still in beta phase.

    Quoting the Gecko blog:

"Gecko is an application installer and manager for Windows Mobile. It is inspired from the Apple AppStore and the Ubuntu Package Manager.

For Windows Mobile users, installing an application has never been an easy process. There are cab files, exe files, msi installers and compressed files and each of them install differently. Most of the time, you will need to search for your application and then synchronise your device with your computer in order to install applications.

This is the problem Gecko will fix by providing a user-friendly application manager similar to the Apple App Store that will allow users to download all their applications from the same place without a computer. Gecko will also make sure your applications are always up to date and update them if necessary.

For developers, Gecko will offer several features to help them integrate Gecko functions in their applications. Software submission is easy and completely free. Your software will be hosted as long as you keep us updated with the latest version of your software."

If you like the idea - head over to the Gecko website and get updates about the project.

Palm Pre - some interesting information and new features revealed!

    Palm_Pre_Expanded2

Check out this video interview of Roger McNamee of Elevation Partners.

He is clearly a gadgets freak! But his passion and words actually make sense to me!

Listen to what he has to say about the drive behind the webOS:

I don't know if you;ve noticed, but there are couple of hidden features Roger is hinting about:

    - Automatic alerts whenever you are running late to your next appointment

    - Daily agenda (I think it's the thing I miss the most in the iPhone)

    - "Synergy" method of combining contacts and calendars from multiple locations (including LinkedIn)

    Here's a quote I liked:

"But better than that, it does stuff for you. So when you wake up in the morning, it has taken your calendar -- if you ask it to -- and downloaded the maps for you whole day, it's downloaded the wikipedias for the people you're going to visit and the companies you're going to see... Why is it on PCs you have to go and do all that?"

    Brilliant. Where do I sign?

Windows Mobile 6.5 - coming next month?

There's a lot of rumors lately about the release of Windows Mobile 6.5

Here's a picture showing a (possible) prototype of a new user interface which will be released with WinMo 6.5.

    11-12-08winmo65c

    Looking good!

My feeling is that Microsoft probably invested in a new shell a-la TouchFlo and SPB Mobile shell which will make the winMo users happy. I assume all the rest will remain as it but it is still a big step forward!

    PS:

I hope MS will take some of my suggestions (I gave it for free!) and turn Windows Mobile to Windows Mobile Touch!

    ASUS Eee-Phone: Coming Soon?

Mark sent me an email with a very nice image of the (soon to come) first ASUS Android based smartphone called Eee-Phone!

According to Jonney Shih, chairman of Asustek, the phone will be the command center at the heart of "the digital home", kind of like the way the iPhone works as a remote for iTunes, only it will control the whole house.

    Sounds promising, isn't it?

Check out the picture of the Eee-Phone: (not sure if it's real or not, but if it is - it sure looks promising!)

iPhone is the #1 mobile browsing device in the US

    dec-2008-metrics-us-operating-system-share-by-month

AdMob serves ads for more than 6000 mobile websites and over 400 400 mobile applications around the globe.

Every once in a while they are performing some interesting statistics of the devices and web browsers who performed the requests.

This information can hint on some trends in the mobile market.

Couple of days ago, they released AdMob’s December 2008 Mobile Metrics report which shows that the number of devices accessing the mobile web continues to rise. Traffic from the iPhone touch – one of the best selling holiday gifts – doubled on Christmas alone and was 3.4 times higher in December than in November. The iPhone OS has already surpassed the RIM OS and Windows Mobile combined - which I think is an amazing achievement.

    chart

As you can see in the pie-chart, in the US, in December, iPhone generated a whopping 48% of smartphone requests.

SHBT MyHome brings Windows Mobile 7 to all of us!

    Screen18 Screen20

Windows Mobile 7 is not here yet, but for the guys in SHBT it doesn’t matter - they simply developed what seems to be the next generation of the Today Screen and the beauty of it is that it’s available right now for any Windows Mobile device (version 5, 6, 6.1).

I got a review version of SHBT MyHome and played with this cool application for a while. Here’s some of my thoughts of it.

First, unlike TouchFlo 3D or SPB Mobile Shell – SHBT MyHome is focusing on capturing all the important information in one snapshot.

It means that when you are using it, you get to see all of your phone information (calls log, SMS), Outlook mails and appointments, profiles and more - in just one screen! Not an easy task to do when you have that tiny WinMo screen, but SHBT does a great job in achieving that.

The advantage of it is that you don’t need to slide your finger around to see the information you are seeking, it’s all there in front of you.

On the other hand, don't expect a TouchFlo 3D substitute here, SHBT's approach is more simple and clean.

    Design:

The design of the MyHome is very nice! (as can be seen in the pictures).

It includes several panels (lines), each panel represent a subject and can be expanded once you select it.

The application is working fast, especially if you are used to the TouchFlo which is somewhat heavy.

The bottom of the screen includes 3 buttons: start (which launches the selected application), windows (which opens the start menu) and end.

Above those 3 buttons, you can find some useful shortcuts in a panel called Media Bar. I have to admit I would rather replace that bar with an additional informative panel such as Outlook tasks etc.

SHBT Weather can be embedded in MyHome, which is nice, I hope SHBT will develop additional “plug-ins” such as the weather plug-in in the near future.

Another thing that immediately pops up is the perfect support for single hand navigation using the D-Pad. Many shell applications do not work perfectly with the D-Pad, but MyHome seems like it was designed for this navigation method. Well done!

    Here’s some more beautiful images:

    Screen31 Screen32 Screen33 Screen34

OK, but you all know me by now, and as always, I simply cannot review a software without complaining a little bit, so here are the things I miss in MyHome:

    1. Auto-popup when the device wakes up is currently missing. It means that you need to manually launch MyHome which is a shame. Some people like it, but I prefer an auto popup.

    2. Landscape mode: this is not a critical issue, but when using devices such as HTC Touch Pro, you really expect any shell application to auto adjust itself when you switch from portrait to landscape mode.

    3. The media panel is not so trivial to operate with the finger gestures. On the other hand, as said below, it's working perfectly with the D-Pad which is good.

    4. Appointments panel currently shows only the next appointment. I'm one of those guys who would like to see the daily agenda, which means - I need to see all of my appointments for the day. Would be great if it can be added in one of the next versions.

    Cool.

So to summarize, I think that beyond the beautiful design, MyHome is a great today screen which is also fun. It still has some weak points but that is subjective to the person who uses it. I think that more configuration capabilities will solve many of those issues.

If you enjoy using your TouchFlo 3D and don't mind the speed - you are probably not the one to take this software, but if you are using a device without a customized shell application - MyHome can enhance your device experience.

It seems like SHBT are constantly improving MyHome with more features, more themes (including self made themes) etc. I will keep following their updates and post more reviews about new versions of Myhome - here at the Mobile Spoon.

You can get SHBT MyHome together with SHBT Weather for €14.95.

Check out SHBT website in here.

Nope, there's nothing wrong with my Phtoshop editor, these images are real.

HTC to buy Motorola? I don't think so...

motorolahtc I saw an interesting post today in WMPowerUsers talking about rumors that HTC will buy Motorola.

Even though I think it's not likely to happen, I just want to say to the HTC dudes: DON'T DO IT!!!!

My experience with Motorola is with their older devices and with the Symbol devices (rugged handhelds running windows mobile). I always get back to thinking how bad the user experience is - in both hardware design and software user interface.

    Pictures From The Garage

    Some people go to CES:

    ces

While other people go to mobile events held in a...

    Garages...

Believe if or not, I just came back from a mobile event held by a group called GarageGeeks.

Every month or two, they meet outside a garage to talk about mobility.

The presentations included Microsoft (didn't say that much), iPhone dev tools, Android dev tools, Fring dev platform and more.

While sitting... sorry, we were actually standing... I tried to take a picture using my Touch Pro. I have to say I tried each and every option, including the led flash on, and maximum brightness, and the best thing I could end up with was this:

    025028

Since it had such a bad quality, I tried the iPhone camera (for the first time in the dark...) and was amazed by the much better results.

    Judge for yourself:

     IMG_0519IMG_0518

Those are almost the same pictures as the ones above, and you have to admit that iPhone's simple 2.0 megapixels has definitely beaten the s<beep>t out of the Pro's 3 megapixel (with led flash) camera.

    How do you explain that?

Evil Magneto To Protect Windows Mobile Devices?

    magnitto helmet

I saw this WinMo case today, which looks a like the Magneto helmet...

Magneto is a powerful mutant, with the ability to generate and control magnetism, Magneto, is the X-Men's most prominent enemy.

Interesting to say that Magneto was also the codename of... (surprise surprise) Windows Mobile 5!

Ha. I bet you didn't know that!

    As written in Wikipedia:

"Windows Mobile 5.0, originally codenamed "Magneto",[7] was released at Microsoft's Mobile and Embedded Developers Conference 2005 in Las Vegas, May 9–May 12, 2005. Microsoft plans to offer mainstream support for Windows Mobile 5 through October 12, 2010, and extended support through October 13, 2015."

PalmPre vs. iPhone vs. WinMo vs. Android vs. BlackBerry - Round #2 - Fight!

    DA-KNOCKOUT01

As you recall, my subjective OS comparison ended in a tie between Windows Mobile and Palm Pre.

Following your comments (here and also in mobilitySite and WMPowerUsers) I realized people wanted a second round where they could actually vote and decide how the fight will end.

So here it is: Round #2, you choose who will win this fight!

    runble

    Here's the question:

    1. Which mobile operating system is the best one, according to your opinion?

But, to make things more interesting, I added this second question:

    ha ha ha (evil laugh)

    2. If you could have 2 devices, which one would you prefer as your second device?

    Great.

So make sure you vote, and I will summarize the results in a couple of days.

    Thanks

    wmpower

Not too often do I get to see my posts in other blogs.

As the Mobile Spoon is still a young blog, most of the material I write about is influenced by other blogs and sites.

One of them, which I really like is WMPowerUsers and it just gave me a love link to my OS comparison.

So, in return, I just want to recommend that if you own a Windows Mobile device - WMPowerUsers should probably be your number one resource for original stories, tips, apps, and tweaks.

    You asked for it!

    cat-dog-funny

I've been beaten, spanked and lowered but I will not break!

I've been accused in not knowing anything about iPhone even though my personal device these days is an iPhone 3G.

I've been told I need to learn about BlackBerry before I write about it although most of my emails in 2008 were sent from BlackBerry 8800.

I've been told my operating system comparison was too subjective, but I still stand behind my words!

And since you asked for it: the fight will be expanded to included another round.

We shall call it: "Round #2" and this time, it will be an open poll for everybody!

Palm Pre vs. Windows Mobile vs. iPhone vs. BlackBerry vs. Android - Round #2 - Fight! - Coming soon!

And this time - there will be no mercy!

And I'm also planning a small surprise in this poll...

    Ocarina Contest Results

    293053479screen

iPhone app store certainly includes a lot of useless crappy apps, but one which may be useless at first, is a real innovative app called Ocarina. It transform your iPhone into a musical instrument, and it actually lets you play music.

The startup behind this app is Smule. They recently did a contest calles “This Contest Blows” to see how far people would go with this new instrument.

Here's a list of links to videos of the best ones.

The winners, by the way, will receive $1,000 each. Nice.

    * Hardrockgrl’s “Oh Shenandoah
    * David Choi’s cover of “Hot N Cold
    * “Sadness and Sorrow
    * Monkey Head
    * Good sleep, fast sleep
    * Greetings from Hungary
    * “Whistle Stop
    * “Carol of the Bells
    * “Song of Storms
    * “Music of the Nose.” (done by nose blowing...)

Here's one of the videos, in case you are too lazy to click on the links...

Tip: How to send SMS through email

    Solution_Panel_EmailSMS

    Is that cool or what?

Am I the only one who didn't know it existed?

It goes like that: you put the number as the name of the email and add a specific addition to it - for example:

    T-Mobile: number@tmomail.net

Null Keyboard - Windows Mobile Freeware

PalmPre vs. iPhone vs. WinMo vs. Android vs. BlackBerry - Fight!

It seems like I'm not the only one excited about the Palm Pre.

Gizmodo just published a nice post comparing between Palm Pre, iPhone and Android.

I took the original list (found in here), twisted it a bit according to my own opinion, added some new categories and of course, added Windows Mobile (and BlackBerry) to the competition.

    So, are you ready?

    runble

    1. Touch Screen:

Android, iPhone and Palm Pre have capacitive screens. Only iPhone and Palm Pre have multi-touch which is much better, so we have 2 winners here, each with 1 point:

    iPhone: 1 pts

    Palm Pre: 1 pts

    Windows Mobile: 0 pts

    Android: 0 pts

    BlackBerry: 0 pts

    2. Screen Gestures

All new devices have gestures. I believe iPhone used to have an advantage here, but after watching the Palm Pre videos I believe Palm took the gestures capabilities couple of levels up (shortcuts, closing apps, etc.).

In addition, there's this gesture interface in the bottom of the device which really gives extra points to Palm.

    Palm Pre: 2 pts

    iPhone: 1 pts

    Windows Mobile: 0 pts

    Android: 0 pts

    BlackBerry: 0 pts

(Well well well, what do you know, the new-comer leads the way...)

    3. Overall Design:

palm-treo-pro-4-thumb Until I saw the Palm Pre amazing pictures, I was certain that the best looking device ever created was Palm Treo Pro (or HTC Touch HD).

Omnia and Xperia are also good candidates here so since only Windows Mobile has this huge variety of different form factors, I will give the point to Windows Mobile.

Note: I wanted to penalize the Android for T-Mobile G1 for the horrible design but since it doesn't have points yet, I couldn't...

    Palm Pre: 2 pts

    Windows Mobile: 1 pts

    iPhone: 1 pts

    Android: 0 pts

    BlackBerry: 0 pts

    4. Single Hand Navigation:

Not every user is aware of that need, some people are even still using a stylus(!), but having the ability to operate your device with only one hand can really change your quality of life.

For me it's a critical consideration: operating my phone while holding a bag, walking with my dog, or any other situation you can think of.

2 months of experience and I still can't properly operate my iPhone with a single hand. The Android G1 has a sliding QWERTY so I guess it is out as well.

Based on what I've seen so far, and based on my personal experience with Palm Treo, I'm willing to bet the Pre will have the greatest single hand navigation. But since I just mentioned Treo 750 running Windows Mobile - it proves that WinMo can get single handed as well (it's all a matter of form factor), so I will give 1 point each.

Oh, and let's not forget BlackBerry which also gets 1 point here.

    Palm Pre: 3 pts

    Windows Mobile: 2 pts

    iPhone: 1 pts

    BlackBerry: 1 pts

    Android: 0 pts

    5. Multitasking:

    iPhone - out.

Android - almost, but not quite there yet.

Windows Mobile - of course! (1 point there).

Palm Pre - the best! [The best Jerry! The best!] And did you see how they manage and close each task? multi-tasking by design. 1 point.

    Palm Pre: 4 pts

    Windows Mobile: 3 pts

    iPhone: 1 pts

    BlackBerry: 1 pts

    Android: 0 pts

    6. User Interface:

Even with the TouchFlo 3D, Windows Mobile is not doing well in this section.  iphone11

Palm Pre looks amazing as well, even better than iPhone in some aspects, but we didn't see enough, we don't know how 3rd party apps will look like, and couldn't find the flaws yet.

Android did not convince me that it's better than the iPhone, so I will give this point to Apple, they deserve it just for the sake of creating a revolution.

Note: I almost took that 1 point from BlackBerry due to the horrible 'text only' user interface in most devices...

    Palm Pre: 4 pts

    Windows Mobile: 3 pts

    iPhone: 2 pts

    BlackBerry: 1 pts

    Android: 0 pts

    7. Development platform:

The Pre's "Web OS" is an interesting concept. Many developers know how to write Java script, but the question is - how strong is it? How will the development environment work when trying to debug etc.

I once had an unpleasant experience with Java, trying to develop using IBM WebSphere tools (tip: don't ever try that), then I moved back to Microsoft's legendary Visual Studio - without a doubt, the best development framework.

With .Net compact framework - developing WinMo apps is something every kid can do. (heck, even I managed to develop a couple of free tools). Point goes to Windows Mobile.

    Palm Pre: 4 pts

    Windows Mobile: 4 pts

    iPhone: 1 pts

    BlackBerry: 1 pts

    Android: 0 pts

    8. PIM & Office Tools

No need to explain why Windows Mobile still leads this section.

BlackBerry is the best when it comes to emails, but I hate the workarounds for the office documents.

I believe Palm Pre will not be far behind but point goes to Windows Mobile.

    Windows Mobile: 5 pts

    Palm Pre: 4 pts

    iPhone: 1 pts

    BlackBerry: 1 pts

    Android: 0 pts

(We have a changeover! Is this fun or what?)

    9. Web Integration:

I took this section from the Gizmodo list, personally I don't find it as the most important section, but I guess other people do.

Gizmodo Wrote: "The Pre subtly integrates the internet into the phone at every opportunity, and it's awesome. Contacts get pulled in from Facebook, Gmail, IM and and scanned for dupes; the messaging app shows your last several emails, IMs and SMS with that contact in a single window. Really, really smart stuff. Advantage: Pre"

    Windows Mobile: 5 pts

    Palm Pre: 5 pts

    iPhone: 1 pts

    BlackBerry: 1 pts

    Android: 0 pts

    (Can you stand the hit?)

    10. App Store / Developer Community:

While there are hundreds of Windows Mobile software & freeware sites, the AppStore, managed to create a bigger buzz (even though it doesn't have trial options - which is lame)

From checking the Palm AppStore, I don't think they will be able to compete with the original one.

Android's more "open stance" might make it a decent opponent here, but I think that for now iPhone gets the points.

    Windows Mobile: 5 pts

    Palm Pre: 5 pts

    iPhone: 2 pts

    BlackBerry: 1 pts

    Android: 0 pts

    11. The Network:

Acording to Gizmodo: ("we stand by our numbers: Sprint is the best 3G network in our tests") Sprint is the best 3G network.

On the other hand, we want the freedom to choose our own network!

Since Android (G1) is a T-Mobile phone (for now), Palm Pre is Sprint, and unlocking the iPhone is a pain in the a$$, I will go with Windows Mobile. You have the freedom to choose, and there are plenty of unlocked devices too. Point goes to Windows Mobile.

    Windows Mobile: 6 pts

    Palm Pre: 5 pts

    iPhone: 2 pts

    BlackBerry: 1 pts

    Android: 0 pts

    12. Physical keyboard:

palm_Keyboards let's throw away this iPhone (though I must say I type pretty fast with the landscape keyboard - the problem is that many apps do not support landscape mode which brings me back to throwing it away...).

The Pre QWERTY keyboard is great, Android has it too, and Windows Mobile has many devices with good keyboard.

But for me the BlackBerry keyboard is the only one that gives a really fast and convenient typing. RIM will finally get another point!

    Windows Mobile: 6 pts

    Palm Pre: 5 pts

    iPhone: 2 pts

    BlackBerry: 2 pts

    Android: 0 pts

    13. Camera:

Since the best Cameras can be found in Windows Mobile devices like the Omnia (not all of them though) - the point will definitely go to Microsoft here.

    Windows Mobile: 7 pts

    Palm Pre: 5 pts

    iPhone: 2 pts

    BlackBerry: 2 pts

    Android: 0 pts

    14. Battery:

We still don't know what will be the battery life of the Pre, but we can easily disqualify the iPhone from participating this one (20% during the night when 3G, WiFi and Bluetooth are all off!?).

Gizmodo gave extra point to the Palm Pre because of the wireless charger. I will do the same.

    Windows Mobile: 7 pts

    Palm Pre: 6 pts

    iPhone: 2 pts

    BlackBerry: 2 pts

    Android: 0 pts

    15. Copy & Paste:

The iPhone is the only one which doesn't have this basic feature. Brrr.

BlackBerry's copy / paste experience is far from being convenient so RIM does not deserve a point here as well.

WinMo, Android and Pre are the winners here, but since copy/paste is such a basic feature, I will give them only one 1 point which will be split between the 3 of them.

    Windows Mobile: 7.333 pts

    Palm Pre: 6.333 pts

    iPhone: 2 pts

    BlackBerry: 2 pts

    Android: 0.333 pts

(Android finally gets one... OK... almost one point...)

    16. Browser:

Pre, iPhone and Android browsers are based on WebKit, which has become the standard for the mobile web.

Safari crashes every once in a while, that's true, but I still think it's one of the best browsers.

I tried the android, and the navigation was not smooth.

I know many WinMo users think that there are better alternatives for Windows Mobile, but I tried Opera and I don't think it's good enough just yet, and for me SkyFire is an Autobot. (the first one who could fly, by the way...)

    skyfire

I will go with Gizmodo here as well, and give the points to the Pre and iPhone for having multi-touch in web browsing (a feature that I like very much)

    Windows Mobile: 7.333 pts

    Palm Pre: 7.333 pts

    iPhone: 3 pts

    BlackBerry: 2 pts

    Android: 0.333 pts

    Summary.

Wow, that was intensive, don't you think?

The first place goes to... both Windows Mobile and Palm Pre!

What a match it is going to be!

(Who would have thought that those 2 old rivals that struggled 10 years ago with green screen PDAs will meet again...)

Of course, everything here is completely subjective. I'm sure many people will still prefer the BlackBerry alternative, while some spoiled kids will still nag their dad for an iPhone.

It's amazing that the good old Windows Mobile is still standing and fighting proudly, mainly thanks to great devices that hide the weaknesses of the old OS.

I know there's a lot of mobile "power users", freaks, and blogger with a worm corner in the heart for Palm. It leads me to believe that the Pre is going to be a hit.

    Sneak a pick: HTC's Devices For 2009!

2009 just started and we already have a list rumors for the upcoming year.

The latest one is, believe it or not, the complete list of devices HTC is planning to release this year.

Here are some of the models I liked:

Maple - I like Clamshell QWERTY devices, although I don't like the design of this specific one.

    n738295857_5523513_4668

Topaz - is that the Diamond inheritor? I guess it is.

    n738295857_5523515_5159

Rhodium - I guess this one will be replacing the Touch Pro...

    n738295857_5523519_6305

Actually, it may be the Tungsten replacing the Pro...

    n738295857_5523521_6779

Oh, here is something I like: Willow. Remember the name.

    n738295857_5523524_7489

And here is the HD follower (I think...):

    n738295857_5523528_8542

And this Jasper dude sure looks promising as well...

    Android Continues to Gather Strength

    Android copy

Bad news for Windows Mobile fans, as Motorola is dumping Windows Mobile devices just to go with... Android

And as if it isn't enough, HTC is just about to release an improved Android handset.

    Motorola:

    According to PhoneScoop:

"Phone Scoop has learned that Motorola's handset division is expecting a large round of layoffs as soon as this week, according to someone familiar with Motorola's plans. The layoffs are confirmed to be significant and may amount to 50% of the entire handset operation. Motorola's set top box, networking equipment, and enterprise device businesses would not be affected. Phone Scoop has also learned that Motorola is not planning to have a booth at the CTIA Wireless trade show in April, which is the biggest wireless event in the U.S. Lastly, Motorola is prepared to trim the number of new phones it brings to market down to just a dozen per year, and the only smartphones it will produce will be based on Google's Android platform."

    HTC:

    According to SmartHouse:

Mobile phone Company HTC is set to launch a brand new phone touch phone that will take on the Apple iPhone and the new Pre offering from Palm claims a senior executive of Telstra.

The new touch phone has been developed using a combination of the Google Android operating system and Linux based software written by HTC. The screen is believed to be bigger than current offerings from HTC.

    hdandroid-198x300 (Image Source: WMPowerUsers)

Executives from Telstra who had met with Palm at the CES Show in Las Vegas to review their new Pre offering said that the new phone from HTC was "better and more functional" they said.

"We have seen both and we believe that the new HTC phone will be a real competitor to the iPhone and the Pre which at this stage looks nice but is still not delivered to market".

AniWeather - HTC's Weather Tab Running On... iPhone?

    Flashlight Freeware for Windows Mobile

    lolsq1

Cool application (only if you are a geek of course...) that turns any Windows Mobile device into a flash light / lighter etc - inside the screen itself. (no Diamond is required).

    image1qa6

    Features:

    - LAMP, a simple white screen.
    - Strobe, to call for attention (or hypnotize someone º_o).
    - Fader, with fade-in/fade-out light, like a lighthouse.
    - SOS, that spells s.o.s in morse code.
    - Disco, random bright colorful lights, like a disco.
    - PEN, in which you can draw temporary light forms.
    - LIGHTER , for fun on a concert, as you can see on the picture.
    - LOVELYGHT, just a visual test, also good for the loved ones.
    - Android boot animation
    - LightSaber with sounds. Press top, middle or bottom of the screen for diferent effects, or use your keypad.
    - Starlight animation (heavy on CPU).
    - Exit, obviously to leave the application, you can also use the ENTER (in the middle of the keypad) at any moment.

    image1ub2

    To use:

As you enter the app, it places you pocket’s screen on full bright mode and removes any fade-out and stand-by option. As you exit it restores your previous settings.
If you click on the screen while on the LAMP area, it changes between 8 colors.
If you click on the FADER screen, it changes between 5 colors.
If you click on the SOS screen, it allows you to create your own morse code, just click and hold your finger on the screen for it to remain white (still with bugs), if you don’t click it for a while it goes back to the automatic SOS.

15 Questions (and answers) about the Palm Pre and webOS

Palm_Pre_Standing PCMag managed to catch some top executives from Palm and Sprint and make them answer the following questions:

1.) How much will the Pre cost?
Palm and Sprint haven't set the price yet. But analysts hope it will be $199 or $249 with a two-year contract.

2.) What will Pre service plans look like?
The Pre's data plans will be more like the Samsung Instinct's plans than any other Sprint phone model, a Sprint rep said.

3.) Will other U.S. carriers get the Pre?
At least 90 days after Sprint does, but maybe as much as 6 months later.

4.) Will there be other Pre models?
Yes. There will be different models, in different shapes and sizes. According to a tipster, the next Pre may be a lower-cost, candybar-style phone without a QWERTY keyboard.

5.) Will there be a GSM Pre?
Yes. Palm is anticipated to announce a GSM/UMTS model for Europe and Asia in mid-February.

6.) When will foreign carriers get the Pre?
Palm expects to address this at a press conference at Mobile World Congress in mid-February.

7.) How do I get my personal info into the Pre?
While the Pre won't come with desktop software, there will be solutions for people to get their Palm Desktop or Outlook info, and info from earlier Treo and Centro models, into the Pre.

Palm_Pre_Side8.) Will the Pre run Palm OS apps?
Not initially, but a third party could write a Palm OS emulator.

9.) How do you get music and video onto the Pre?
You can drag and drop it over from your PC using USB mass storage, or buy songs on the device using a built in Amazon MP3 Store client.

10.) What will the app store look like?
I saw it; it has a page of featured apps with star ratings below them. It looks a lot like the Apple app store.

    11.) How about the SDK?
The SDK will be called Mojo, and will have APIs to extend Javascript to access hardware features of the device, Palm reps said. There are things you won't be able to do in the 1.0 SDK, like write directly to the frame buffer. But you'll be able to access all the core phone databases.

12.) How does the browser work?
The browser is based on WebKit, like Apple's Safari. It supports streaming video in RTSP, H.263 and H.264 formats, but not Flash. However, I'm almost 100 percent sure Palm and Adobe are working on a Flash plug-in right now.

13.) Will there be restrictions on apps?
Palm will certify all developers and approve all apps, but only to make sure they work properly. They won't kill apps for content-related reasons like Apple does. Think Android, not iPhone.

    14.) Is webOS Linux based?
Yes, but developers won't get access to the Linux core.

15.) When will we hear more?
At both Mobile World Congress in mid-February and the CTIA trade show in late March—but probably also more often, and sooner, than that.

    Source: PCMag

I would like to add another question, for myself:

16.) Mr. spoon, are you going to buy the Palm Pre?

Yes. I will. For sure. The moment I can. Definitely. I do. Let's meet the parents.

    Motorola A3100 - a Short Video

Chris Leckness from MobilitySite made a short video about the new Motorola device called: Motorola A3100

I personally don't like Motorola, but it's mainly because of the lousy user interface they used to make over the years.

Since this one is running Windows Mobile- I guess that changes things.

    Video:

According to WMPowerUsers this device is exactly what is needed right now: "Of course many will complain about its pockey 2.8 inch QVGA screen, but in these recessionary times its exactly these cost-cutting measures which will help win the day. The MotoSurf will not be $200 with contract, but more likely free on contract."

    Less WinMo Devices During 2009

    Hulk and windows mobile

According to Todd Peters, VP of marketing for the Windows Mobile Division, Microsoft intends to limit the number of devices running Windows Mobile during 2009.

One of the great things with WinMo is that everyone can find the perfect form factor for his need.

On the other hand, having so many different devices running the same platform requires a very generic infrastructure which means extra development and support efforts as every device is a bit different.

    Generic infrastructure == less features.

This is a fact I see in every software I use or develop.

Like an old man once said: "Trying to find one shirt for all seasons will make you sick during the winter and smell bad all summer..."

    OK, I just invented that...

But I'm getting old, so it's almost the same...

Another Video Review of the Palm Pre

OK, here's another video describing the amazing looking device.

The user interface looks great but more important - very user friendly.

I'm summarizing my thoughts about the UI of the new webOS and will publish another post about it soon.

    Palm stock going up...

Why didn't I think of it before?

I was certain they will publish an Android like OS which looks like a beta version taken from the 80's.

    I guess I was wrong...

and since I was wrong, I missed this one:

Verizon Mobile Search will be done by Microsoft

    ttt

Finally, a win for Microsoft in the mobility realm.

Verizon’s mobile search business will be done by Microsoft Live Search which will be pre-installed on every mobile device.

According to the rumors, Microsoft offered $1 billion to Verizon over 5 years which is twice what Google had offered...

I personally never use Live Search as I never managed to find anything with it. But I hear good things about it, I wonder what are you using as your favorite search engine?

Palm webOS - first screenshots of the new operating system

Few hours after the formal announcement of the new Palm operating system called webOS, I'm collecting some more information about the interesting new device coming soon called Palm Pre and the user interface of the new operating system.

The OS is suppose to be friendly for developers, but what about the user experience? It seems very nice to me, too similar to the iPhone, as I expected, but still nice:

What do you think? I find it a bit too similar to the things already invented by Apple. Still, the design looks great.

    Go Palm!

Palm Treo Pro, Again, I know...

    pro

A minute before Palm enveils their amazing new stuff in CES, here's a reminder of the best WinMo device ever created (I know it although I don't have one...) - the Treo Pro.

Perfect design, built-in keyboard, fast (like any Palm device in the past), and most of all - running Windows Mobile 6.1.

This is exactly the things I like WinMo devices for.

I know I keep saying how I like this device, but it's just because I really like this device... if any of the readers is using it and would like to send his review - please feel free to drop me an email about it: mailto:gil.bouhnick@gmail.com

Palm just redesigned their web-site, in case you are interested to check their products out.

How Do You Choose The Right Mobile Device For Your Workers?

How Do You Choose The Right Mobile Device For Your Workers? is an article I wrote about selecting the right mobile device in enterprise organization, and mostly field service organizations.

Mobile Enterprise has published it today:

    mobileEnterprise

Check it out, even though it is aimed mostly towards field service organizations, it has some interesting points about differences between different portable devices such as Laptops, PDAs, etc.

Gartner's Magic Quadrant for Mobile Enterprise Application Platforms

The report talks about Mobile Enterprise Application Platform which refers to mobile infrastructure for developing applications, server side tools, middle-tiers, connection management, security etc.

    162969_0001

Notice that Sybase it the leading company in both ability to execute and being visionary. Microsoft is second in the ability to execute but is located pretty bad in being visionary. Most leading companies in this report are the ones which have multiple platform support (working with WinMo, laptops, Symbian, Blackberry etc.)

    Few highlights:

  • Most significantly, Microsoft, Apple and Research In Motion (RIM) have developed broad mobile application development (AD) toolkits that are focused on single-platform development rather than multichannel development. In the cases where a simple approach (such as a single, complex application for a single target) is required, these represent viable long-term choices. We estimate that this approach ranges from 40% to 70% of deployed enterprise applications, depending on industry. Gartner believes that this percentage will decrease as more enterprises face multichannel requirements to support greater device and operating system (OS) diversity.
  • Many organizations are decentralized, so dictating a single mobile enterprise platform is difficult. In many cases, tactical platforms/tools will augment strategic ones. These organizations will often be driven to third-party device management and security vendors, or move toward a more architectural approach in the future.

    browser-comparison

Looking for a good browser for your Windows Mobile phone?

Here's a great starting point to get more infromation about the many alternatives and also some useful download links (many of them free):

Menneisyys at Mobility Site did a detailed comparison between Windows Mobile browser with the benchmark set as the iPhone’s Safari.

Among the alternatives: Opera 9.5, Skyfire, Opera Mini, Iris, Internet Explorer 6, Pre-6 Internet Explorer and NetFront.

The full report can be found in here.

The final comparison chart can be found in here.

And I can be found in here. Big Grin

    How Quick GPS Works

    quickgps

I recently started using iGo Navigator.

I've noticed that the times I use QuickGPS makes the Cold Start process work much faster, so I thought it would be nice to share what QuickGPS does.

I found a great article in HTCWiki:

Quick GPS does not "triangulate" using cellular networks, not even close. Let me start by telling you how a GPS gets a fix on its location, and then explain how Quick GPS offers a shortcut.

The GPS chip receives a synchronized timed signal from the satellites (birds) the US DoD launched into orbit. Each bird uses a different channel. With a good signal from three or more birds, GPS starts to get a fix. It does this by calculating the time difference between the reception of the different signals, then calculating the relative distances to each of the birds, then figuring out where it sits in the middle of the birds.

The GPS calculates four spheres, and its located somewhere on the surface of each of these spheres. There is only one point where these four spheres intersect. That's you.

If you're good at geometry, you might think that it needs 4 birds to get a fix, but in fact, if the GPS assumes that you are on earth, that provides another sphere, so it only requires 3 birds to get a decent fix. More adds altitude and accuracy.

But the GPS needs to know where each of the birds is before it can decide where IT is. That information is not calculated, but is available in a detailed download of orbital data provided by the DoD called ephemeris data. It is transmitted...from the bird to your GPS. For a cold start, your GPS needs to download the entire file, without interruptions in the signal - BEFORE it can even start getting a fix. In fact, the GPS may not even know which channels to tune into, since it doesn't yet know which birds are currently overhead. This causes a slow first fix.

Quick GPS, is simple. Ephemeris data is passed thru WiFi or cellular data connection ahead of time, and you never have to wait for it to download over the satellite. Awesome.

    Pharos 117 & 127 vs. VelocityMobile 103 & 111

    VelocityMobile 111 and 103 - 2 new devices!

EverNote - Free Version for Windows Mobile

    evernote

EverNote is an online document storage tool which has couple of mobile clients (iPhone and now Windows Mobile too!).

I think it was originally designed for Mac and iPhone, but it's interesting to see how it works in Windows Mobile.

All the documents are stored online so it does require registration and Internet access.

Palm's New Phone Rumors - Coming This Thursday?

    palm_keyboard

I never follow the rumors to see if they really end up being the truth, but this time I'm going to.

According to CrunchGear's source, the new Palm phone that will be presented at this week’s Consumer Electronics Show, will run an "amazing" operating system a-la-iPhone [AKA: NOVA] and will also include a full QWERTY keyboard that will slide down under a wide portrait-oriented touchscreen.

    Yummy.

Tweak: Spice things up in your WinMo Task Bar with 'Colored Top Bar'

    screen09vf9dh0

Here's a nice one (found in the WMPowerUsers).

You all know how I love to tweak things around in those Touch devices form HTC (Diamond / Pro / Fuze / HD).

A new tweak is now available: spicing things up with some colored task bar icons.

The tweak was developed by massi959 from the XDA-Developers. I tried it and it's cool (although not all my icons was replaced, I'm still checking that...)

*Note: This will only work on VGA devices.

    Download Links:

Colored Top Bar WWE Call.cab (this one has some additional phone icons - but I didn't like it so if you ask my opinion I would grab the first link...)

    United Colors of Mobile Phones

    colors

Since I mentioned the Pink, here's something I found in Mr. Mobile's new blog

    200901021941

ColorWare have developed a high-gloss, scratch-resistant polymer-based coating that can be applied to Mobile Phones, Games Consoles, MP3 Players and PC’s.

Their site also includes a place where you can build your own designs!

    Here's mine:
