Great looking TouchFlo themes by PROBEX

themeblue2

I just love great looking art stuff, especially when they combine with Windows Mobile.

XDA-Developer PROBEX has designed amazing looking theme for TouchFlo II (see picture above) called AlienXTream. I just love it!

preview-alienxtream

Unfortunately this theme cannot be ported back to the original version of the TouchFlo, but I did find previous work of PROBEX which also looks great, and will work on TouchFlo3D (the original version we all have in our Diamond, Pro, and Fuze...

Check out some of the screen-shots:

There are also a blue and orange themes available to download:

The developer has requested to keep the original CAB links so he can keep track of the download numbers, and I would like to to respect his request, so here are the links to the original threads, you will be able to find the download link there.

Some statistics from AdMob: Smartphones trends

AdMob serves ads for more than 6,000 mobile web sites and 1,000 applications around the world. AdMob stores and analyzes the data from every ad request, impression, and click and uses this to optimize ad matching in the network. Each month they release a report that provides insight into trends in the mobile ecosystem.

Here's some of the key points in this month's report:

Which device will be most widely adopted in the Enterprise in 2009?

Mr. Mobile which used to be a WinMo blog (but not any longer, as most of the posts now concentrate on iPhone), has posted about a poll conducted by LinkedIn, in which readers had to answer the question:

What will be the most widely adopted device in Enterprise in 2009?

Funny, but before that post, winMo was in the third place, long after BlackBerry and iPhone, but I guess most of Mr. Mobile's readers are still Windows Mobile fans, and now the results look slightly different:

linkedin

In regard to the poll itself, I find it hard to believe that iPhone will be so well adopted in enterprise, because of the nature of the phone and the price. I would gamble on Android and BlackBerry of course.

2 Samsung devices leaked

2 leaks from Samsung, both of them relates to devices running windows mobile (yippie!).

First leak: Samsung B74300.

gsmarena_004

Looking great, this phone will luckily run Windows Mobile, hold a 3MP auto focus camera, and probably (as seen in the picture) run the latest TouchWiz UI. I would call it OmniaHD but for some reason Samsung insisted that the new Omnia will run Symbian...

Second Leak: Samsung Mondi

samsung_swd-m100_mondi

This strange looking fellow is probably the Samsung Mondi, features a 4.3 inch touchscreen, slide out QWERTY, and — (drums-drums-drums-drums) - 4G WiMAX.

"Bwabic-Bwabic" (said the frog)

I like the funny keyboard, don't you? It looks more like an UMPC device to me, but check this out: it is assumed to run Windows Mobile as well... Coo-hool!

Tweak of the week(end): See more appointments in your TouchFlo3D home screen

(That's one hell of a title...)

One of the things I don't like in TouchFlo3D is not being able to see your next appointments in the home tab.

Like, come on HTC, it's Windows Mobile, not just one of those toys for kids right? We need to be able to see our meetings in a snapshot!

We are serious people here, we need to... wait... what's that? Hey!? Is that TouchFlo3D with smaller clock and a list of appointments?

Wow, that's a coincidence, it fits like a glove to my long title!

apps-thumb

Oh, and here's an example of removing the call history!

To download this tweak, head over this this XDA thread, download and install the CAB files.

Palm Treo 750 running Windows Mobile 6.5!

WinMo65

Palm Treo 750 used to be my favorite windows mobile phones. It's fast, it feels great in the hand, it has a lot of hard keys and a built in QWERTY keyboard, it has good performance but also good stability.

It was the first windows mobile device to become my personal phone and if it wasn't for that WiFi (which isn't there...) I would never let it go...

But guess what, XDA-Developers brought some glory back to this old phone, just before people completely forget how great it used to be.

As you can see above, Windows Mobile 6.5 is now running on Palm Treo 750! sweeeet!

032109165642 032109165704

You can download and install the ROM from here.

But, as written in WMExperts, you need to remember the following:

"hacking your phone is bad, unofficial, not necessarily legal, may cause joint pain and loosen teeth, is not safe for small children and some animals, and almost assuredly won't help you with the opposite sex."

MoDaCo NoData

jhjhk

Here's something (old) for those of you who are using an older version of winMo phone, you know, one of those who are not well equipped with manufacturers add-ins and a fancy shell...

NoData lists your GPRS connections, and allows you to disable them so that they won't be used.

It's every traveler's nightmare: having your foreign trip only to come home to a gigantic phone bill because your smartphone connects to the internet every 5 minutes to check for mail, RSS news items or weather updates. And data connections in an other country than your own can be pretty expensive. MoDaCo NoData lets you disable all data traffic without disabling the phone functions in a single tap.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Graphics Video: Drooling Is Assured!

As many of you already know, Qualcomm has a new processor called the Snapdragon that has caught a lot of attention because of the Toshiba TG01 that I recently reported on. (CLICK HERE) There is no denying that the TG01 packed with the 1ghz Snapdragon packs a punch. But the only thing that video displayed was the new Toshiba User Interface, which for me, did almost nothing. Today we have the real goods on what the Snapdragon can do in the following video:

Impressive right? Well, as many of you know, Qualcomm faced a ton of criticism along with HTC about the whole driver debacle. Lot’s of finger pointing ensued and the short version of what happen, or as near as I can tell is that HTC was reluctant to purchase the necessary drivers and features that were available in Chipsets like the 7200 and 7500 series. So did Toshiba ante up for the full menu of Qualcomm Snapdragon Drivers and features? It sure appears that way. Will HTC also learn from their past mistakes? With the HTC releasing the Thoth, a Qualcomm Snapdragon equipped beast of a device, we can only hope that drivers will be included!

Twitter. What are you really doing with it?

As you can see from my Twitter updates, I'm not that keen of the idea of twittering.
I mean, I just don't see myself reporting my activities to people I barely know, it's strange!
Besides, if I want to share something important, I can always post about it in my blog! So here it is, something I would like to share with you: a nice joke about Twitter!

History of PDAs - Part #2

History2 copy

Our journey to learn the history of PDA's continues and if you haven't read the first chapter yet - go ahead! There will be a short quiz at the end!

History of PDAs - Part #1

History of PDAs: Part #2

This chapter begins with 1996, and boy what a year it was: Palm, Symbian, Windows CE and who knows what else! Check it out:

1996: First Smartphone by Nokia:

nokia-9000 9000a

In 1996 Nokia introduced the first mobile phone with full PDA functionality, the 9000 Communicator, which has since grown to become the world's best-selling PDA and which spawned a category of phones called the smartphone.

Of course, after a while, Nokia took over Psion's Symbian OS (see first chapter of the History of PDA's) and it is now the OS used in all of its' smartphones.

Still 1996: PalmPilot is in the house!

 Palmpilot5000_eu

In that exact same year, Palm released their own PDA called PalmPilot. (The name later on was replaced due to trademark infringement lawsuit brought by the Pilot Pen Corporation to Palm but the name PalmPilot remained synonym for PDAs).

The original purpose of Palm was to create handwriting recognition software for other devices, named Graffiti, but their research convinced them they could create better hardware as well.

Palm's handhelds initially ran on the popular DragonBall processors, a Motorola 68000 derivate. More recent models are using a variation of the popular ARM architecture.

palmOS

For 13 years Palm has developed PDAs and smartphones, but it seems like 2009 is going to become a major milestone for Palm with the release of the Palm Pre

Still 1996: It's Windows CE!

While Nokia and Palm unleashed their beasts, a small unfamiliar company (named Microsoft), released an unknown operating system called Windows CE for minimalistic computers and embedded systems. Designed to work with less than 1 megabyte of memory, Windows CE became the basis of the later to come PocketPC and Windows Mobile PDAs.

workabout_pro With Windows CE one can develop robots, industrial controllers, gas station pumps, voting machines, kiosks, POS terminals, video games, medical equipment, digital music players, interactive televisions, Internet appliances, cameras, etc. but most of us are familiar with it around PDA's. Some industrial PDAs are still running Windows CE.

Read more about the differences between CE and PocketPC in here.

1999: Handspring Visor:

3 years later, in 1999, Palm continues to rock in the PDAs zone, and with the Palm V it seems like Palm's PDAs (still with green screens by the way) are sexier than ever!

But, at the same time, 3 unhappy people who actually founded Palm and invented the PalmPilot (Jeff Hawkins, Donna Dubinsky, and Ed Colligan) decide to leave Palm and found a new company called Handspring Visor.

Handspring Visor released the first Visor PDA in '99 and after a few years they started with the Treo line of products.

handspring

(The amazing thing in the picture above is that you can actually see some of the familiar Treo UI concepts in that old Visor device. Same buttons style, same tabs concept. And to think that it was released 10 years ago!)

Look how identical are the different calendar applications:

handspring_visor_edge PalmTrioCalendar_1

2000: First try, PocketPC 2000:

e125

What's this? Is that a today screen? What year are we? Oh, I see, it's almost 10 years ago... they way things are changing... or not.

The first version of the PDA which was based on Windows CE was released in the same year bug 2000 hit the entire universe... (OK, maybe most of it is real, except for the bug part...).

One of the biggest problem with it was that it was not finger friendly, but since no one knew back then what it means, it didn't make any difference.

The first version did not create the desired buzz, but will Microsoft give up on their PocketPC or will they continue to invest in it?

And what do you think of that today screen? Will it succeed or will it vanished eventually? How about adding widgets capabilities to it and calling it... plug-ins?

(More about it in the next chapter of the History of PDA's)

To be continued...

Great sound quality with SRS WOW HD

6

Here's a good freeware if you use your WinMo 6 device for listening to music.

In short, SRS WOW HD software enhances the audio quality and makes it sound better through the speaker or ear plugs.

Here's what SRS had to write about it:

"SRS WOW HD, ideal for mobile music applications, provides fidelity to digitally compressed music through the use of patented, psychoacoustic techniques. SRS WOW HD creates an ultra wide sound field with richer lows and brighter highs so consumers are engaged in an immersive, more realistic audio experience. Windows Mobile device makers have been using SRS WOW HD not only to deliver superior 3D stereo and bass listening experience for music over headphones, but it is also a very useful tool to tune the sound quality of the speaker(s) built into the handset. Using SRS Labs’ proprietary psychoacoustic techniques, people are able to perceive improved sound imaging with improved high and low frequencies."

BlackBerry Storm - what's beneath that screen?

Storm copy

Few days ago I published a short review about the BlackBerry Storm which of course mentioned RIM's innovative touch-screen featuring a tactile feedback.

(for more information about how it feels to use it, check out the following link: One night stand with BlackBerry Storm)

Well, thanks to Pony99CA from MobilitySite, I got that link leading to the following image:

sc004

Apparently, the clickable touch-screen of the Storm is, in fact, a very simple implementation. A dimple on the back plating (right) under the screen depresses when you "click" on the panel.

LG GM730 User Interface Video Demonstration

lgggg

OK, if you like nice user interface samples - you will probably going to like LG's latest WinMo shell UI called S-Class which is part of the GM730 phone.

S-Class has a little bit of everything: widgets, launch icons, panels and more. It looks like LG tried to combine many of the concepts that were successful for the iPhone, Omnia etc. Who can blame them?

Here's a nice video demonstration:

mLock - Lock screen with pass code

mLock_beta_2 mLock_beta_1

I'm not a big fan of lock screens. I believe that if your phone accidentally makes a call - it's probably destiny! It was meant to be!

But, if you insist, I guess there are ways to block those accidents. One of them is a lock screen called mLock which includes a pass code. Here are some of the features:

  • option: starts when device goes to suspend
  • option: starts when S2U2 gets unlocked
  • customizable abortive attempts allowed
  • phone locked for 1 minute after customizable abortive attempts
  • Graphical User Interface
  • skin support
  • orientation: Portrait and Landscape
  • supported resolutions: QVGA/WQVGA
  • multilingual support
  • AppToDate support

Just be careful with all of those lock screens (like S2U) not to end up too locked...

Lenovo X1 phone is running... Samsung's TouchWiz?

Lenovo

Hey, I just found this picture of this Lenovo X1 phone which, according to EngadgetMobile, won the Red Dot original design award.

Of course, the first thing that comes to mind is the name (X1?) the overall design and the user interface.

Lenovo calls it the "Touch Dream" and it's practically... another version of Samsung's TouchWiz?

How to: Change your Windows Mobile sounds. All of them...

sounds

If you like tweaking around your WinMo phone, here's a great way to control the entire sounds system, including the ones which are hidden somewhere in the system registry.

brins0 (maker of Gyrator... what do you mean you don't know Gyrator? So how to you automatically rotate your Diamond screen? Check it out in here) has released another free app for us tweakers, called Tonality that controls all the hidden sounds of Windows Mobile.

The tool works with wav, mp3 and audio files, but it does require .NET Compact Framework 3.5 (if you don't have it yet, it's about time to install it, because most of the new stuff now requires it).

There may be some errors on first run, it's nothing, ignore them, it's just the 'format device' command... (OK, joking, it's a joke... probably a bad one...).

Changes are saved when soft reseting the device.

Changes in Windows Mobile 6.5

Samsung OmniaHD. Windows Mobile after all?

samsung-2009-lineup-blurry

Samsung recently presented the line of phones for 2009.

According to the presentation, it seems like the OmniaHD will have 2 versions, one running Symbian and one running windows Mobile.

I couldn't understand why Samsung should abandon their successful winMo Omnia to a Symbian version, I still don't get why they need it, but at least now it looks like there's a chance that the OmniaHD will also have a Windows Mobile 6.5 version.

One night stand with BlackBerry Storm

Storm copy

A friend of mine was kind enough to loan me his bran new BlackBerry Storm for the night, which of course, turned it into a long night...

Here's my impression of it:

The Storm is a beautiful device. I like most of the recent phone designs by RIM, but this one looks similar to the Touch HD and has a full touch screen which makes it more sexy. This is RIM's first touch screen device and I assume it was not easy for them to turn their OS UI into a completely finger friendly UI - but the results are quite good.

IMG_0778

The Storm offers dual-mode functionality for world-roaming capabilities as well as EV-DO Rev, combined with GPS, a 3.2-megapixel camera, pretty responsive accelerometer and a long list of pre-installed applications, but the real highlight of this phone is the innovative SureType touch screen.

IMG_0766

Touch screen:
I love it. It's different from anything I've ever tried so far. Here's how it works:

With a normal capacitive screen, a touch means activation, even if it's a short touch or a touch by accident. When you touch a button - it's as if you clicked it.

RIM took the capacitive capabilities, and turned it into tactile feedback, meaning that the touched area gets highlighted (see keyboard image below), but not yet activated (you see where you are but nothing really happens).
In order to really activate the button you are on, you need to press the screen. Yeah, that's right - push your finger, and surprisingly, it feels like a real button! How you ask? because the entire screen surface is "clickable".
It's as if the entire screen sits on one huge button surface, so that moving the finger over screen virtual buttons only highlights the ones which will be activated in case of pressing the real button which is... the screen itself.
Got it? I hope so, because it's not that simple to explain...

Anyway, the reason why I like it, is because: A. it's innovative, B. it's working pretty well, C. It's not hard to get used to it as people are saying. D. It prevents accidental clicks when touching the screen by mistake.

There are drawbacks about it though, because the areas near the borders of the screen are harder to press, which makes it harder to use.

Example of a highlighted keyboard button:
untitled2

User Interface:
As I mentioned at the beginning, the Storm user interface is mostly finger friendly. It's not as fancy as the iPhone or HTC's TouchFlo, but it's highly customizable, and simple to use. I did find some exceptions where the user interface is not well suited for fingers, but in those cases the tactile screen (that highlights the touched elements) helps to avoid mistakes. The accelerometer switches between portrait to landscape mode pretty fast and most of the applications take very short time to open up.

IMG_0763

Two things bothered me about the user interface:
1. Some stuff seems to miss the final tuning, some UI elements are inconsistent with others (e.g. scrolling experience, buttons), and some stuff should be improved (when you enlarge the system font, the text in the lists become slashed)
2. Bugs, and a lot of them. I had some blinking objects, fading controls that suddenly came back corrupted, etc. I'm sure it can be fixed (maybe some of it is already fixed) - but still, worth mentioning.

Keyboard:

If I had to put my finger on one thing that really annoyed me while working with the Storm - it's the virtual Keyboard.
I'm a fan of RIM's full QWERTY keyboards, I think they are the best, but the Storm's virtual keyboard was a big disappointment.

Two things I didn't like:
A. In no full QWERTY in portrait mode. (How come!?)
B. The landscape full QWERTY does not have any prediction algorithm nor auto-correction, just a spell-check (but a good one).

You can type the letters: K-e-y-b-o-a-r-... so it's pretty obvious you are going to write keyboard, right? But then if you click F instead of D - it will still write Keyboarf, when it's obvious that you meant to write Keyboard... (well, unless you're a klingon...).

Virtual keyboards have a lot of inaccuracies, so auto correction and word predictions are very important. Storm does not do a good job in this area so you end up typing slowly and fearfully.

The Spell-check, on the other hand works very nice. Misspelled words are getting an underline and clicking on them pops up a menu with some corrections alternatives.

 42574_42230_storm-3

Strong Loudspeakers:

This may sound funny, but the Storm has an almost unusual loud an clear sound quality. I found myself investigating how it's built, because I really enjoyed the music sounds it produced.
I was so impressed by the sound quality that I immediately compared it with my other devices, but there was no match there...

Camera:

I didn't get to test it too much, but I did noticed that the shutter speed is terribly sloooooooooow! Don't ever try to capture events as they happen with the Storm, as I counted around 4 seconds from the moment you click on the button, until the picture is actually taken.

4 Seconds are just too much. And the worst part is that during that time, you see a black screen, so you can't even tell if something was caught by the camera...

Especially if you had Soundwave fighting Autobot Jazz on a structure composed of BlackBerry Storm, lying on BlackBerry 8800, placed on top of a chubby HTC Touch Pro...

IMG_0774

Pre-installed applications:

BlackBerry Storm comes packed with some useful software tools:

Memo-pad, tasks, audio notes, documents to go, spreadsheets to go, powerpoint to go, facebook, flickr, video camera, 2 games, and more.

IMG_0769

Summary:

Don't expect the Storm to be an iPhone replacement. It's still a business tool more than an entertainment tool (with the exception of a good sound quality).

Like other BlackBerry phones, it is well equipped with office tools, push emails, and PIM applications, packed inside a great looking phone with an innovative touch screen.

Talking about the touch screen, it may be the reason why many people will suddenly want to have a Blackberry, but at the same time, the virtual keyboard might ruin the typing experience, lowering productivity, and keeping business people away from the Storm.

All in all, I liked the Storm, I liked the form factor and I liked the SureType screen technology. I didn't like the keyboard at all, but I assume there will be people who will argue about how good or bad it is.

Apple's iPhone OS 3.0 - what's inside?

iphone-os-3-software

100 new features are coming to iPhone with the upcoming release of the new iPhone OS version 3.0!
Not 10, not 33, 100! And for older iPhone owners - for free!

Here are my notes from the iPhone OS 3.0 preview:

First thing: Copy and Paste!
Yeah!!! Applause!

_mg_8844_540x360

(Look how beautiful it is...)
You can easily select a word or a range of words and then you have copy / cut / paste. At last. And not only text, but other formats as well (pictures etc.) and get this: for ALL the applications including SMS and mail.

Landscape support for all the applications:
I really needed this one. I just can type the keyboard in portrait mode. This enhancement will make my typing experience much better!

Improved SMS and... MMS!
I said in the past I never use MMS, but at least now Apple added a support for it. Some people may be very happy at the moment.

Voice Memo Application by Apple:
I'm using some nice free audio recorders, but now it seems like iPhone 3.0 will come with an original one.

Improved Search Capabilities:
Including searching in older mails, calendar entries, and more.

Enhancements to the SDK:
More than 1,000 APIs will be available to developers with iPhone 3.0 including emails capabilities for all apps, iPod API and more (see screenshot)

_mg_8760_540x360

Here are some AppStore Enhancements as well:

In-App Purchase:
P
urchasing portions of the application content, for example: you will be able to purchase new levels in games.

Peer-to-peer networking:
Discover other iPhone users which are located close to you over Bluetooth. No need for long pairing, instead, a special back-end technology will popup a message about your neighbors, just like it does when a new WiFi spot is found.
Cewl!

_mg_8717_540x360

Excluded from the list: Background Processing and Flash support

Excluded: Background processing? Not this time. Apple claims it hurts performance and battery life, so instead, iPhone OS 3.0 will have push notifications services for all the applications. The only concern I have is that the notifications come from the iPhone server, which requires a valid connection (not sure I fully understand this one...).

Excluded: Flash support?  Not yet. (Not sure why), may still be declared soon.

The Transformers live among us!

People with weak hearts should not read this post!

Guys. I don't want to create a panic or anything but I think I just saw a real autobot!

It's parking just outside my house now, and I somehow managed to found the courage and sneak up behind this great beast's back and take this picture!

Few minutes ago I thought it started to transform but it was just my phone ringing... (custom ringtone... you know...)

auto1

Update: I'm still watching this amazing piece of steel and until now (7 hours later) it still isn't moving. Few moments ago I was certain I heard Optimus Prime driving by my roadway but it was just a truck.

I will update you all (live!) when this autobot will start moving.

Find songs and lyrics from your mobile phone

Midomi:

IMG_0016 If you are familiar with iPhone's Midomi, here's a nice alternative for Windows Mobile devices that finds the lyrics of a song instead of the song itself.

Midomi is a cool application that "grabs" sounds and finds the original song of it (for example in youTube). You can try to sing the song you want to find, hum it, grab it from your radio or write the words. I used it for a while now and it's one of the coolest things for mobile phones.

You can also access Midomi over at their website that gives the same capabilities in here: midomi home.

(for some reason it doesn't work so great from the site, but from the iPhone version it hardly make mistakes!)

SmartLyrics:

ScreenShot2 Last night I found SmartLyrics over at 1800PocketPC which immediately reminded me about Midomi.
SmartLyrics is a new Pocket PC Freeware from lpaso from xda-developers that lets you search for the lyrics of any song even if it is being played on your WinMo phone.

The app uses the www.LyricsPlugin.com services to retrieves the lyrics, so it does require a data connection.

Head over to this XDA thread to learn more about it or download.

If you know about a WinMo app that searches a song in youTube based on sounds search - please let me know! :-)

Mobile OS numbers by Gartner

gartner-worldwide-mobile-os-2008

Gartner recently published some statistics about 2008 smartphones sales results.

As can be seen above, Symbian, the undisputed leader, continues to slowly decrease while other mobile platforms such as RIM's and and Apple's sales are increasing significantly.

Strangely, Palm sales results show an increase of 42%, and this is BEFORE the Palm Pre was released. I wonder how next year's results will look like...

Windows Mobile lost his second place to RIM during 2008, but continues to be a leading mobile OS. WinMo 6.5 will be released this year, and so far it looks very promising.

But above all: Apple, with an amazing growth of 245% over 2007.
2009 will not be so easy with the economic situation and rising competition from Google and Palm, and I'm not sure iPhone OS 3.0 will do the trick this time.

Amazing art work done by using an iPhone drawing app called Brushes.

brushes030_300

I came across Jorge Colombo's website where he published some of his art work. Amazingly, he has a large collection of drawings he made using an iPhone application called Brushes. You heard it right. The drawings you see below are made with a finger!

288230264screen Brushes is an iPhone drawing app created by Steve Sprang. I just downloaded it and it seems great indeed, but my best drawing so far was a stupid smiley...

Now back to Jorge Colombo's work; of course I cannot place all of his amazing work here, so I allowed myself to copy just a few.

So head over to this website to see more of those amazing iPhone finger drawings.

WinMo 6.5 theme for SPB Mobile Shell

ReleaseWinMo

This one is hot! Seriously hot!

mtstmp form the XDA-Developers just published this great looking skin for SPB Mobile Shell 2.1.

I'm a huge fan of this best of breed shell application but this turns it to be even better looking!

SPB are going to release version 3 of Mobile Shell soon (see this great video demonstration for some more details about it) but if you just can wait - this one is for you.

According to the developer:

"This theme requires Mobile Shell version 2.1.5
It is for QVGA ONLY! It will not work on your Diamond, Touch Pro, HD, or Omnia. I'm sorry, it just takes too long to do!
I recommend changing your system font to Segoe UI. It makes everything fit better, and I think it improves the look of every app."

spbIphon

BTW, mtstmp has another great theme for SPB Mobile Shell that turns your phone into an iPhone clone, but as this look & feel was already done by so many developers, I would go on the WinMo 6.5 look which seems to be much more modern.

To download - head over to the XDA-Developers.

iPhone 3.0 will be announced next week!

small_iPhone copy

According to TechTree a new OS version will be announced next week by Apple.

With an increasing competition from probably every mobile vendor out there (Palm with their Pre, Google with their impressing Android, WinMo 6.5, Nokia and RIM), Apple just had to continue improving their product in order to remain the leader (yes, I know many of you will not agree with this statement, but let's admit it - Apple did make the biggest mobile revolution in the past few years).

So what's going to be in iPhone 3.0?
According to the rumors, here are part of the improvements:

Adobe Flash
There has been a lot of talking about it, let's see if it's real this time...

MMS Support
I personally don't think it's a disaster not to have it, but still...

Cut - Paste
Jailbroken iPhones already have it (me too!) it would be nice to see how Apple will make it OOTB.

Background Process
I personally don't believe this one, as it seems like too much of a change in the basic behavior of the OS, but still, rumors do mention it.

What are your thoughts about it?

A Storm is coming!

vzw-blackberry-storm-left

BlackBerry Storm is in the house! (my house...)

A review is on the way - I'm off to play with it for a while.

Microsoft Commercial: “Start Your Windows Phone”

Everyone has gotten used to the Cell Phone Carrier Commercials which there certainly never seems to be an end to. We have even started seeing some targeted HTC Device commercials, which is really nice since US Carriers seem to make a huge mess of marketing these devices. Today, we have a new player to the marketing scheme of things, Microsoft. Check out this new commercial caught on YouTube:

It’s a pretty short commercial at 1:17 minutes long. If you don’t watch it for any other reason, pay attention at the 0:22 second mark! I was laughing so hard I almost cried! How many of you have ever felt the urge to do this to your WinMo device? LOL

Let us know what you think!

WiFi scanners for Windows Mobile

wifiOne of the good features of the iPhone is a great WiFi scanner which roams through different networks and pops up nicely when it locates a new hotspot.

Windows Mobile devices have different ways to scan for WiFi spots, and lately there are a lot of free tools available.

Here are some of the free alternatives I found:

WeFi:

wefi-main  wefi-networks

WeFi is software loaded onto your mobile device which enhances your existing WiFi management software with a more powerful connection tool. The WeFi software automatically detects and qualifies all WiFi access points within range and connects you to the spot with the best Internet connection. If the WeFi software detects a new access point, it allows you to be the first to map it. WeFi also provides you with Instant Messaging tools, Allowing you to create a buddy list, and to see where your friends are currently connected.

Download WeFi (or read more)

WeFiFoFum:

page11-1000-full page9_1

This latest version of WeFiFoFum makes use of the latest features of .NET CF to give you the highest performance for war driving. With this version you can be confident your GPS logged coordinates for the networks you find are highly accurate, and can rely on a smooth user interface experience.
There is a PC msi installer which will install WiFiFoFum and the Compact Framework 2.0 into your ActiveSync so you can install and uninstall from your device as you please. Alternatively you can use the CAB version of WiFiFoFum which you can install directly on your device, however you will need to make sure you also have CF 2.0 installed aswell.

Features:

  • List view showing information such was WEP, SSID, MAC, signal strength(RSSI), latitude, longitude and location precision (HDOP)
  • Radar view conveys distance to access points
  • Save, load and merge XML files
  • Export to text, Wi-scan, Tom Tom POI, MemoryMap and Netstumbler (ns1) formats
  • Choose between Pocket PC 2003 toolbar or WM5 soft button look and feel
  • Aggressive scanning mode to find even more access points

WifiLocations is a simple program that will automatically activate WiFi on wifi enabled devices at user-specified locations. You DON'T need GPS ! You can add your current location (according to the nearest GSM/UMTS-cellsites {not supported in some zones of the world}) as a location where wifi will activated automatically. This is quite useful for people who want to activate voip over wifi when at a wifi internet network is available. You need to add the wifisettings yourself through WM5/6.

    WiFi Monster

    Screen4 Screen3

  • This one is (I believe) the newest one. Not sure how mature it is, but it worth checking. Here's the features list:

  • Show current WiFi status
  • Turn WiFi on and off
  • Finger friendly
  • It supports VGA and it looks nice after all

    Download WiFi Monster

    PeekPocket:

    PeekPocket-2 PeekPocket-1

PeekPocket is a new Wifi sniffer. His MAIN advantage is : No installation!
Just copy the EXE file onto your machine... and Voila !
The functions are similar to other tools like this. Cherry on the cake, it automatically pick the colors of your theme.

The Tale Of The Tape: Touch Pro vs. Touch Pro II

I thought I would pass on a great article and photo edit by wmpoweruser.com and see what our community has to say about the soon to be released HTC Touch Pro II and all it’s added size and girth. Check out this photo:

    tpvstp2

Quite a difference huh? Now, I took the article a little further and added a few devices to a spread sheet to really give you an idea of what we are talking about. Check out the specifications on the following devices:

Kaiser Touch Pro Touch Pro II Touch HD iPhone

    Length 112mm 102mm 116mm 115mm 115.5mm

    Width 59mm 51mm 59.2mm 62.8mm 62.1mm

    Thickness 19mm 18.05mm 17.25mm 12mm 12.3mm

    Weight 190g 165g 175g 147g 133g

    Screen Size 2.8" 2.8" 3.6" 3.8" 3.5"

As you can see, the Touch Pro II is not as bad as press it’s getting. It’s only slightly longer than the Touch HD and iPhone, two VERY popular devices right now. Narrower than all devices except the Touch Pro (Fuze), and not nearly as thick as the Kaiser (Tilt) and the Touch Pro. Lastly, if the TyTN II/Tilt didn’t pull your pants down putting it on holster connected to your belt, then you will also be fine with the Touch Pro II. This is an IMPRESSIVE device simply because of the Screen Size and Slide out Keyboard. Keep in mind this device will also have a Tilting screen, something I miss still. So what do you think, can you you stand the added bulk for the killer 3.6 WVGA screen and slide out keyboard?

History of PDAs - Part #1

Who developed the first PDA? How did it get to be a smartphone? The Mobile Spoon is going on a journey to learn the history of PDAs.

    History2 copy

    History of PDAs: Part #1

The personal digital assistant (PDA) devices (AKA: Palmtop computers) were introduced back in the 80's with the release of some basic models. Years later, PDAs are everywhere, wearing their new shape as 'all-around' smart-phones, with media players, Internet browsers, game consoles, and more.

The Mobile Spoon is going on a journey to try and find the noticeable milestones in the history of the PDAs. (in case of inaccuracies, feel free to comment!):

1983: CASIO PF-3000 - the first digital diary:

    Casiopf30001_thumb1

In 1983, Casio's first digital diary, the PF-3000, was released.

This electronic calculator had a digital diary, telephone book, schedule, and memo functions.

It was soon in demand among business people. Later models even had an option to synchronize with a PC (using a non-USB cradle of course...).

Although it was never considered to be a PDA (especially due to the fact PDA was not a term back then...) but this old device included some of the pioneering technology for today’s PDA.

    1984: Psion Organizer

    Psion_Organiser_II__270404_thumb2

This piece of beauty from Psion is considered to be the first real PDA. It was first introduced at 1984.

Its first model of the Organizer was based on an 8-bit Hitachi 6301-family processor. It featured 4K of ROM and 2K of battery-backed RAM, and had a single-row monochrome LCD screen.

The machine provided a simple calculator and clock but had no operating system. After the big success of generation 1, Psion decided to create the Organizer 2 (and later also 3) which were even more powerful than the first one!!! ;-)

Both models had an alphabetically arranged 6x6 keyboard protected by a hard plastic sliding cover. (similar to slider phones nowadays... or maybe not...)

    Note about Psion:

Making some more research (or should I call it: "regoogle"), I found some interesting facts about Psion:

Psion was also a pioneer in many other areas: It was Psion who originally developed the Symbian OS (later sold to Nokia), it was Psion that invented the term NetBook and according to this amazing story; tomtom and iPod were both a result of inventions from people working at Psion (ex Psion directors). Does it mean that Psion only hires great minds? Or maybe it means they don't know how to preserve them?

Years later, Psion is now part of Psion Teklogix which creates rugged handheld and laptops devices. I had a chance to work with some Psion Teklogix PDAs (such as iKon and Workabout) and I have to say they are really powerful devices.

1992: Apple Newton - Introducing the term "PDA":

    applenewton_thumb

The term 'PDA' was first used on January 7, 1992 by Apple Computer CEO John Sculley at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nevada, referring to the Apple Newton.

Yep. This innovative, eye-candy, device from Apple really made a revolution (rings a bell?)! It had a touch screen, and included both hardware and software, which together combined the Newton Platform. It was an operating system!

The first personal digital assistant? Probably.

Here's a funny mockup of what could have been the Newton launcher:

    old

During tthe 90's, other companies, notably Sharp, Motorola, and Digital Ocean, also released their own devices that ran the Newton OS. None were as successful as Apple's devices.

    No Copy/Paste, no MMS:

The Notes application allowed users to create small documents that could contain text that had been typed, or that had been recognized from handwriting, as well as free-hand sketches, "Shapes", and "ink text".

One of the biggest criticism about it, though, was that it didn't have Copy/Paste. Apple said it will be solved in one of their next releases...

(Looking at the old notes application does show some resemblance to the newer Apple PDA - the iPhone...)

    Apple_newton_messagepad_checklist_jk[2] 1942165224_adddacf8aa_thumb1

The Newton development started in 1989 and officially ended on February 27, 1998. They say there are some Apple fans that still use this old device.

Next in the History Of PDAs:

Palm taking over the PDAs realm, making the Apple Newton disappear. Some say history repeats itself... (without mentioning Palm Pre...)

Shake and Save: Screen capturing tools for Windows Mobile

One of the coolest iPhone features is the screen capturing capability using the power and home button. Here's something similar for windows Mobile which will let you take screenshots by simply shaking your phone (working on Samsung Omnia, or HTC Touch pro/fuze/diamond/HD).

Cell-phones are going down, here comes the Smartphones!

    MobileOS

According to In-Stat, smartphones are going to double their share of the mobile handset market in the next four years.

This means that while the entire mobile handsets are declining, the numbers of the iPhone, G1, WinMo, etc. will continue to rise.

At the moment, smartphones account for 10% of all mobile handsets sold. Sure, people like us talk and think about smartphones all the time, but most people still use cellphones.

All smartphone platforms will enjoy growth, but In-Stat believes Linux is going to grow the most. In-Stat noted, "Smartphones with Linux OS (including Android) will see the highest growth and the second-highest volume behind Symbian.

According to the report, Linux OS will outpace Windows Mobile, RIM, and iPhone OSX. Mainly because of the fact that the Android (that already passed Symbian in Internet browsing) will be developed by many manufacturers. Symbian will continue to hold the biggest market share but the numbers will be eaten by Linux and the others...

Recent research by In-Stat found the following:

    • Smartphone security is still inadequate and is likely to be a source of problems for users and their employers, based on In-Stat’s consumer survey results.
    • Almost one-third of survey respondents plan to obtain a smartphone the next time they upgrade their current phone.
    • Smartphones with Linux OS (including Android) will see the highest growth and the second highest volume behind Symbian.  Linux OS will outpace Windows Mobile, RIM and iPhone OSX.

After reading the report, I thought the figure below will be interesting to our US readers as well (click to enlarge):

    FEWidgetsLite for Windows Mobile

    Screen003Screen002

Wish you could have a Samsung Omnia but your parents won't buy you one? (OK, lame opening...)

FEWidgetsLite is a Windows Mobile freeware which allows the creation of visual widgets. It brings a similar look and feel as Samsung's TouchWiz UI.

Unlike FEWidgets, that uses Flash 7, this "lite" edition is designed for Flash Lite 3.1 (Opera's plugin).

    Changes on 0.2.0:
    - All widgets where rebuilt and optimized.
    - [New] New Window scroll concept added. Now every layout/page can hold up to three times its size and can be scrolled sweeping you finger vertically on a widget empty area of the screen.
    - [New] Changing layout sets is now animated and can also be performed by sweeping from side to side on a widget empty area.
    - [New] Added option to disable the tray bar (where activesync small icon is showed at the bottom)
    - [Fixed] An exception generates when signal is lost or the phone radio is disabled on some devices.
    - [Fixed] When background is smaller than the screen it won't resize.
    - [Fixed] Kinetic Widgets Bar code always executed.
    - [Fixed] When selecting a contact though double click on the contacts selector, the name won't load correctly.
    - [Fixed] When an RSS item description contains HTML tags they will be included. (Now, no tags are allowed)
    - [Fixed] Simetimes, if Battery Saving was enabled, the widgets would not load anymore.
    - [Fixed] Some widgets would stop funcitoning properly if dragged out and dropped again many times.
    - [Changed] Now Auto scalling is fixed on 200%. Icon and widgets scaling are fixed.
    - [Changed] Multithreading option cannot be set now. By default the application will run on multithreaded mode.
    - [Experimental] Added a new Flash Player 7 working mode. If variable "UseFlash7" on settings.xml is set to "true", the application should work with the Flash7 plugin.
    - [New] Weather widget now uses ajbopp black glossy icons!

GParkS (or: "Dude Where's My Car?" for Windows Mobile)

    kylla_se_siihen_mahtuu

I leave in an area with some serious parking problems.

Yep, you can say I'm one of those guys who get to spend at least 20 minutes a day looking for a parking spot. That's my type of quality time! Just like blogging. If I don't get to do it at least once a day I feel like I missed something.

One of the problems I'm beginning to have is that I keep forgeting where I parked my car. I sometimes even forget it few moments after I get home...

There are plenty of solutions for people like myself: money, shrinks, Palm Pre, Tower defense games, Touch HD, and here's another one: GParkS

    parkt

Sure it isn't the sexiest app out there but it's free and unlike Google maps - it only requires a valid GPS.  You can store up to 3 different locations and even name them if you'd like. When you want to locate one, you just click the respective Find button and you will be provided a compass direction (N, NW, S, SW, E, SE, W, NE) and approximate distance to your destination which will change as you continue to move.

Cool. Now I only need to remember to use it once I park my car...

    Download GParkS

So if you ever get lost trying to find your car in a parking place or just outside your house - try GParkS out.

HTC Touch Pro Service Manual For The Brave Hearted

If you have ever wanted to tear apart your HTC Touch Pro (Raphael), then here is something to help you out, the HTC Touch Pro Service Manual. I warn you, this is not for the weak at heart! As you can imagine, it is very complicated and SHOULD NOT be attempted unless you absolutely know what you are doing or have an extra 500 bucks burning a hole in your pocket and the desire to turn your device into a scrap heap.

I did have a look through it and there is some excellent information you should know. The HTC Touch Pro service manual is very comprehensive and includes tons of illustrations to guide you on your way. You can grab your very own copy by heading on over to HTCwinmobile.com.

Get an iPhone app in less than $1.0

    iphone_apps_price_distribution_percentage

    free_app_vs_paid_app

Here are some statistics about the price distribution of the iPhone apps in the AppStore. As you can see, half of them are less than $1.0 (which usually means - crappy app). 5% of the apps cost more than $10, which is a lot, considering the risk you have when you pay for something without a trial first...

Oh, by the way, 24% of the apps are freewares. Unfortunately, I found that most of them are completely useless or a demo version of the paid one.

iCaller - free full-sized caller screen for Windows Mobile

    UnknownShot FryShot

iCaller is a free WinMo app that replaces the default Incoming Call screen with a full-sized screen presenting a full image.

Here's what the developer had to say about it:

    Features:

    • Lightweight
    • Expands default incoming call screen without affecting its behavior
    • Full-sized contact picture
    • Pictures can be stored on a Storage Card or in Pocket Outlook database
    • Picture can vary for the same contact depending on its phone number (just name the picture with a number, e.g. 5554433.jpg)
    • Customized interface based on HTML

    Instructions:

    • Unpack contents of the archive in a folder on your device, e.g. \Program Files\iCaller (do not forget to copy zlibce.dll too!)
    • Check settings.ini - it is configured for English version of Windows Mobile OS, you may need to replace sSysCallerWndTitle option from 'Phone - Incoming...' to your localized name of system default Incoming Call window
    • Launch iCaller.exe

FaceBook application ported from Windows Mobile 6.5

    fb

The guys from XDA-Developers managed to rip some stuff out of Windows Mobile 6.5. One of the applications they found was a native FaceBook client which was immediately ported to WinMo 6.

Here's a quote from the XDA site:

"This Is a new Facebook aplication for windows mobile! As stated above it was ripped rom the newest windows 6.5 Rom, but this WILL run on windows 6.1, 6.0 and even Windows Mobile Standard from preliminary testing. Tho our WM5 uses have stated that they have been unable to get this App to load. Currently it is at V0.14 so im guessing this is still an early beta program mayb even alpha version. But with that said it still looks and works great! Though it does have some issues. Currently this app has the following features.
    5 Differnt Tabs,
Home - Where you can view your News Feed, Status Updates, and Updated Photos
Profile - Where you can view yours and others Wall, Info, & Photos
Friend - Graphical/Text list of all your friends & what they are doing
Inbox - Here you can view your Inbox, Outbox, Notifications, and Requests
Phonebook - This is a really cool feature where you can call any of your friends that have htere phone numbers linked to there FB Profile.
This App also as some other cool features, such as the ability to "Poke" friends as well as leave comments(a must) view picture albums, upload pictures/videos as well as the ability to update your own status. This app shows real promise considering it is only currently V.14, i personally cant wait for the updated versions that will hopefully come in updated roms being released every few days - a week."

GadgetMonkeys downloaded and tried it, here's what they had to say about it:

"Things you can do: see a news feed, status update feed and photo feed, update your status, upload photos and video, comment on friends’ status, view your own and friends photos, view friends profile, tag photos, read, compose and reply to wall posts and inbox messages, call and text friends directly if their phone number is listed on their profile

Things you can’t do: see comments on your status, see tags on photos, view a live feed, chat and see your events. And it doesn’t look like there’s any sort of notification system where you get a pop-up in Windows Mobile to let you know if you’ve got a new friend request, event request, wall post, status comment, or any other activity."

So, I'm not sure if you should immediatly download it or wait until the application gets more stable, but be sure to follow the XDA-thread for some updates.

Skyfire Is Promoting Live Streaming With Ustream

skyfire_ustream_screenshot If you are looking for the richest Internet Experience form your Windows Mobile Device, or Symbian S60 Device, there is currently only one clear choice, Skyfire. I have been a huge fan of Skyfire from the beginning and have enjoyed watching the fierce competition between Skyfire, Opera Mobile, IRIS, and up and coming Fennec/Firefox from Mozilla.

Skyfire has announced today that they will increase their  commitment to Feature Rich Mobile Internet Browsing by getting the endorsement from Ustream and prominently placing links on your bookmarks tab to 1000’s of live video streaming from Fox, CNET, Air America and many others. Here’s a little more:

    • Ustream will endorse Skyfire as the best way to watch Ustream on a Windows Mobile or Symbian S60 device
    • Skyfire will promote Ustream with prime placement as a featured bookmark
    • The bigger story is that as mobile technology advances, we will see a slow death of these "one off" applications for separate mobile platforms. One Web, one platform for all desktops, all mobile devices.

You can read the entire press release by jumping after the break. And on the off chance you don’t have Skyfire for your prized mobile device, you can click the link below and be magically whisked away to the Skyfire Realm. :) (too much coffee today)

Skyfire and Ustream Announce Partnership to Bring Live Video to Windows Mobile and Symbian Phones

2009 is the year live video and flash content will explode on mobile browsers

(MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA) March 5, 2009 – Today Skyfire, the makers of the PC-like browser for mobile devices, and Ustream.TV announced a partnership that will deliver live video to consumers accessing content from their mobile phones. The partnership, which provides Ustream with prominent placement among Skyfire’s bookmarks will allow users to watch television on their phones from thousands of live streams including those from Fox, CNET and Air America.

    Content is King
Skyfire’s newest 0.9 version released this February, was the first mobile browser to integrate real-time web activity aggregating customized feeds from news, media, Facebook and Twitter. Skyfire continues to deliver the PC web to mobile phones by partnering with web companies and creating a host of media-rich links available in bookmarks.  As the only mobile browser supporting Flash 10 and Silverlight, Skyfire plays any video. The partnership with Ustream underscores its unique ability to deliver live television, videos and radio shows on the phone.

“Live video from partners like Ustream fit perfectly into our plan to bring the best of the full web to the mobile generation,” said Tracy DeMiroz, Skyfire VP Marketing. "Without any development required to have a mobile presence, Ustream immediately gives their users access to all the content broadcast from their website. We know Skyfire users consume a lot of media during their day. In fact, on inauguration day a vast majority of our users were watching Obama on Ustream. That's why we're excited to include Ustream in the Skyfire bookmarks.  In just one click, our users will be watching live television."

Ustream empowers anyone with a camera and an Internet connection to quickly and easily broadcast to a global audience of unlimited size.

“We are constantly pursuing ways for our users to access interesting content or find their audience,” said Brad Hunstable, founder and president of Ustream. “We are excited about our partnership with Skyfire to bring our streams to mobile browsers.”

Skyfire users can find the Ustream link in their bookmarks.  It has top billing in the video category. The Skyfire 0.9 Beta is available for free at get.skyfire.com.
